Strongly bluing Australian gym pics
    #14696032 -

Hey guys, I have posted the pics of these gyms to see if anyone thinks they have an incling as to what species they might be - though I am farily certain microscopy would be needed to narrow it down... My guess is G. purpuratus..?

They were found in Western Australia, growing from a pine tree stump....

I have some more pictures from this hunt I will upload tomorrow when I have more time, but for now I just wanted some quick opinions on these particular pics...

Thanks in advance!

Maybe Alan R. has seen these before... The caps are so dark, or sun-touched.
Great photos, though. Thanks for posting.

I usually call these G. purpuratus but no one has been scoping red Gymnopilus from Australia so its hard to have much confidence in that name.

If anyone wants to work on these I will send the Gymnopilus monograph.

I'd volunteer to do some microscopy on them! I finally have time to get back into the hobby now that summer has come.

Nice find.

Thanks guys and thanks Al for chiming in. Another thing to note was that the taste was reasonable compared to all the other gym species I tasted that day.

It seems there is a large array of gyms from down under that are relatively un-studied. Exciting times and lot of oppurtunities for more magic!

I also found another more red capped gym that showed mild signs of bruising on the cap, but I didn't take pics of it. It was only a greenish hue style bruising and very light, while the stem didn't display any signs of bruising and the taste was very bitter. Im sure it's another active gym...

Blimey I can take you up on that offer if you like, I will save a gill frag for you! Thanks mate...

I am going to bio-assay them tonight or tomorrow, starting with 1g dry. I have exactly 2g dry to play with, plus one large fruit that I have saved for cloning to liquid and cardboard. The cardboard is done now just need to get motivated with the LC, I think these guys would be suited to plug spawn and log cultivation.

Will update with the bioassay results...

I'd be very keen on a copy Alan, got a bunch of monographs but not the info. I hope to get the chance to work on these as well.

After 40 minutes the last 0.8g I had was taken, and 40 more minutes on the effects are only subtle... although there is a definite tryptamine sheen, it is very mild indeed.

There was no tolerance, a light meal eaten around 3 hours before hand.

Gyms are not very potent mushrooms so 1.8g is a very mild dose.

I'm still trying to get my head around Australian Gyms, but from what I can gather there are a number of candidates for this specimen. We have 40 odd species of Gymnopilus in Australia and from what I can gather the species with red-purple colours are:

G. purpuratus
G. dipelis
G. luteofolius
G. moabus
G. megasporus
G. mullaunius
G. purpureo-nitens
G. norfolkensis

There may be others but Gym taxonomy is confusing. Hesler's monograph may not be much help with this find because most of those were described after 1969 and are unique to Aus.

Some of them are described by Cheryl Grgurinovic. I have her book on order, so may be able to help more when that comes. The others have mostly been examined by Bettye Rees and published in different places.

Nice list TimmiT. A few of those are well known so microscopy will either exclude or include those.

^^ what he said:thumbup: even with some bluish pretty purple ones - i would recommend trying a minimum of 8 dry gr per dose - and more around 15 dry gr per dose will LET YOU KNO they have some majik:cheers:

Find some more - get some more pics - and try a larger dose
Happy Hunting and Gym Fun:cheers:
