Sony hacked yet again (June 3rd, 2011), 1 million names and passwords posted online. * 1
    #14553926 -

http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/story/2011/06/03/sony-2nd-data-breach.html

Sony has been hit by a second massive data breach, hackers claim, another potential embarrassment for a company that is struggling to restore its image following the loss of millions of credit card numbers through its PlayStation Network.

The hackers, who call themselves LulzSec, said they pulled off what they described as an elementary attack to highlight Sony's "disgraceful" security.

"Every bit of data we took wasn't encrypted. Sony stored over 1,000,000 passwords of its customers in plaintext, which means it's just a matter of taking it," LulzSec said in a statement. "They were asking for it."

Sony Pictures, a subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America, said Thursday it is aware of the LulzSec statement.

"We are looking into these claims," said Jim Kennedy, executive vice-president of global communications for Sony Pictures Entertainment.

The data — which includes passwords, email addresses, phone numbers, home addresses and dates of birth — was posted to the LulzSec website and appeared to be at least partially genuine.

The Associated Press called a number listed by LulzSec as belonging to 84-year-old Mary Tanning, a resident of Minnesota. Tanning picked up the phone, and confirmed the rest of the details listed by LulzSec — including her password, which she said she was changing.

"I don't panic," she told the AP, explaining that she was very seldom online and wasn't wealthy. "There's nothing that they can pick out of me," she joked.
Passwords published online

Several other people contacted by the AP confirmed that their passwords had been published online. Many were angry and distressed.

"If this is so, I'm very upset," said Elizabeth Smith, from Tucson, Ariz. "I'm very disappointed that Sony would not protect things like that."

Like several others contacted by the AP, Smith said she often entered online sweepstakes — including ones she described as being affiliated with Sony. Neither she nor anyone else reached over the phone said they'd heard from the company about the apparent breach.

Sony Corp. is already is facing questions over why it did not inform consumers more quickly after a massive cyber-attack in April targeted credit card information through its PlayStation Network and Sony Online Entertainment network, compromising more than 100 million user accounts.

At the time, experts warned the attack emboldened hackers and made them more willing to pursue sensitive information.

It is unclear who the members of LulzSec are, or where they're based. The group didn't immediately reply to emails sent to their website's administrative and technical accounts or to a Twitter message posted to the web late Thursday.

The group's website — which has a pared-down, 1990s look—was only registered on Wednesday, according to an internet records search. The site's registrant is listed as being based in the Bahamas.

LulzSec recently claimed responsibility for hacking the website of the PBS television network to post a fake story in protest of a recent Frontline investigative news program on WikiLeaks.

For the past two days, the group has been mocking Sony via Twitter and alluding to a hacking operation.

Posts on the microblogging site through an account linked to the group at times chastise "silly Sony" and "You Sony morons," saying "everything we have will be published in multiple ways to ensure maximum embarrassment and exposure for [Sony] and their security flaws."

The Canadian Government was hacked too haha, the lulzboat just keeps sailing on.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/story/2011/06/02/pol-cyber-attacks.html

Hackers who attacked two of Canada's federal departments stole classified information before being discovered last January, CBC News has learned.

The revelation comes from documents obtained under Access to Information laws, and contradicts what the minister in charge said at the time.

Six months ago, hackers launched an unprecedented cyber attack on the federal government. In January, the government's computer system came under attack.

Hackers sent malicious emails to staff that appeared to be coming from senior managers. When staff opened the attachments, hackers found a path into the federal network, providing access to classified information.

"Indications are that data has been exfiltrated and that privileged accounts have been compromised," said a memo written Jan. 31, 2011.

Why the hell does the Canadian government have classified files on a public network?

I wonder if they're going to write some new internet legislation?

If i wanted to fuck up the internet i'd  totally hire hackers to make it a public issue so i could ram it through the senate.

Whoever was in charge of networking and internet security was dumb as fuck.  Governments are so fucking inept.

yah i do have a funny feeling this is all about passing a law and getting more spying pushed onto the net.  Sony can't be this dumb, something big is going to happen because of all this.

here's one example, there pushing cloud computing....everyone.  imagine a world without "computers" how much "safer" everyone would be.  You still get to do everything you used to, only now your under nanny care with cloud computing.

It's kind of shitty that they are sending out all these peoples information though...

I get that that they are trying to prove how inept Sony security is, but why not just send all the info they got back to Sony or to...  some sort of trusted news agency? to get the word out?

I just think it's weak that they had to dump everyone's info on the web for anyone to pick up to prove that they got it.

Google's servers are getting fucked too... several IP's from China have logged in to my Gmail account in the last two weeks even after I change passwords and everything - I've reinstalled my browser and searched on my computer for keyloggers or anything of the sort but I'm clean - so I assume much of google's security has been compromised.

If you have ever played Planetside(MMOFPS, first of its kind not including WWII Online.) It was my favorite online game ever... totally ruined thanks to Sony bugging everything up, giving into every noobs' whiney, unbalanced nerf requests which always seem to go through. I'm serious, if you are a game developer or aspiring one, look into Planetside to see exactly what not to do

My PS3's blu ray drive died for no reason

I hope they keep getting hacked over and over again, I hate hate hate everything about sony.

Possibly ruining several million lives is not acceptable even if sony is brought down because of it.  This is coming from someone who hates sony for ruining EQ1 with their greed (releasing crappy expansion after expansion to bring in new customers while driving off all the old ones). Stealing personal data to prove a point about sony is one thing, but posting it up online is another.

You don't need a credit card to use PSN, it's free.

The hacking doesn't bother me, I have no information on there. Neither do any of my friends. I also don't play online... Whew.

every major credit card has fraud protection, nobody's lives are being ruined.  This is about screwing a pos company over that thinks they run things and are above the law.

the problem however is that they fail to see how companys like this work.  They won't defeat the dragon, they are only making it stronger, much much quicker.

Weren't credit and debit card details taken? I thought they were, for people who had used them on PS3. Also if passwords were taken, that means that anyone could easily access their accounts, which is especially worse if people use the same password for multiple things.

it does make sense, its a meta4, you either didn't understand it, or you didn't understand how it related to sony.  Either way you choose not to spend very long thinking about it, or what it meant/related, and you didn't tell me what part didn't make sense or why it didn't.  Hense, troll, you just wanted to call someone a loon, wait for a reply, then call them something else or debate something you havn't even thought about.  The fact that you didn't understand what my meta4 was in relation to, shows me that your closed minded to begin with, so what exactly would i be accomplishing by explaining.

now in regards to mongo

the creditcard details are meaningless, 1 phonecall to your card company and the charges are reversed and you have a new card number.  The password subject would point out someone who isn't very bright but i guess is still valid.  However websites get hacked all the time, the only difference here is the hackers in this case made it "public" which is actually doing you all a favor, because now you know, instead of not knowing.  Now you have a chance to change your password before the harm is done.  If they didn't post it on the torrent sites sony would prolly still be claiming nothing is missing, hell they might even have believed themselves when they said it.

they already told everyone nothing was taken the first time, maybe the hackers wanted to prove a point, yes, yes they did.

so think about it, a month ago this happened how many changed there password?  This time, people are going to see there shit on the web and im betting it gets changed, hence now your safer.

Yeah, I think its safe to say that this ps3 haking was random and unfortunate.  But I also feel that if the hackers targeted xboxlive they would have been equally sucessful.

clearly ps3 > xbox, otherwise hackers would've targeted Live

Nowhere can I discern Sony being inherently better placing Sony as being the preferred target; In fact it is the opposite which seems more likely to me. I would assume that the hackers had a bad episode with Sony and then discovered how loose of a ship they were sailing. Anyway, I had a laugh or two from this whole affair.

The sony attacks are hardly 'random'. This whole mess started after they kept boasting about locking their shit down as their software kept getting hacked for homebrew/pirated games. Sony has this clear authoritarian attitude about it instead of working to accommodate the users. What they're experiencing now is the backlash.

there's multiple ways that this can strengthen sony, and internet security as a whole.  The hackers went in to embarrass and try to cripple/slay the "dragon".  But thats not how reality works, when its all said and done we could all be having our little internet ID cards from BS like this or various various other ways all resulting in people getting stronger, and the internet/us becoming weaker.

Everything good in life is good until it gets exploited, or to well known.  Hence sony is going to be doing some major asskicking from there backdoor all the way to congress.  At the end of the day, the hackers won the fight, but lost the war.  Its the way society as a whole keeps getting baby proofed.  Sony is not going down, a year from now the mass sheep won't even remember, and the net result is going to be pressure, change, strengthening.

now i obviously expect you to completely agree with me and call me all kinds of nice names:smirk:  all u have to do is look at the past, the shit thats been going on around us, and the stuff in the talks already to see whats coming.
