OxyContin Maker, Executives Fined $634.5M for Misleading Public

ABINGDON, Va. (AP) -- A federal judge on Friday fined Purdue Pharma L.P., the maker of OxyContin, and three of its executives $634.5 million for misleading the public about its risk of addiction.

Purdue Pharma, its top lawyer and former president and former chief medical officer pleaded guilty in May for claiming that OxyContin was less addictive and less subject to abuse than other pain medications.

Michael Friedman, who retired in June as Purdue's president, general counsel Howard Udell and former chief medical officer Paul Goldenheim each pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of misbranding the drug. Of the total fine, $34.5 million was levied on those three.

Jones placed the company on probation for five years and each of the executives on probation for three years. He also ordered the three to perform 400 hours of community service related to prevention of prescription drug abuse.

Good, OxyContin is a plague here. So many of my friends got addicted to that shit and have since disappeared. Some of them have moved on to heroin too because they can't afford or find Oxy's anymore. I hope the bastards who put this shit on the street fucking die.

I don't know how they could prove/prosecute that OC is less or more addictive/subject to abuse than other pain medications. They're ALL subject to abuse ... I've used/abused Norcos for at least three years of my life, in addition to Dilaudid and Fentanyl, the latter I feel being the most addictive of any pain medication ... especially if you get the cherry flavored Actiq "pops" ... I never really fucked with OC, and very few occasions have I taken Percocet.

So I'm a walking example of the falsehood of the case.

Regardless, it's common sense that narcotics = addictive. Like cigarettes. We don't NEED to read a warning on a box to have common sense that these things are potentially, and in the cigarette's case, LIKELY dangerous. People who really claim to not know better are retards and deserve what they get.

I dont feel that saying its less addictive is that important of a selling point. A lot of the people taking oxy do it recreationally anyways

Ease up StrandedVoyager. Oxycontin is a plague in my area too. Many of my old friends got addicted to it and moved on to heroin. I even lost my 15 year old cousin to the drug 2 years ago. But I'm not mad at the drug itself.

Oxycontin is only partly responsible, if at all, for the hell it raises and lives it ruins. Most of the blame should be on the people that are eating the oxys, blasting them up their noses, shooting them up, and even smoking them I've heard.

My point being that I have used oxycontin many times, but I have never become addicted, never experienced withdrawal, and most importantly I haven't spent my entire life savings on it. Oxycontin isn't such pure evil as it's often made out to be.

wow that is a rough sentence

i agree with HB...all narcotic pains are highly addictive....i thought this was common sense as well..

oxy does ruin lives, but it is very much the fault of the people using them recreationally...this drug was NEVER meant to be used like this..

i am pretty sure that every script comes with a dependency warning...if you become addicted through prescription then that is unfortunate, but i do not feel sorry for anyone becoming addicted through recreational use...

Thats what I was thinking... I mean I've herd it costs a ridiculous amount of money for scripts of brand name OCs before insurance. They recently went to court and won so no one can make generics. And I can't even begin to imagine how many people are addicted whether legally or illegally, filling (multiple?) scrips monthly. Put that all together and 600mill is probably chump change to the bank they pull in from this pharmadope.

I mean these guys actually marketed this stuff as less addictive than other pain medicines... ermmmm yea...
