670 gallons of wine seized by ABC agents

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A Newport News man was arrested on nine charges related to the illegal manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages.

82-year-old James Edward Skinner was arrested at his home in the 900 block of 15th Street, after a search warrant was executed on May 20, a news release from the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) said.

ABC agents seized 670 gallons of wine, with a street value of about $9,000, and one gallon of untaxed distilled spirits, or moonshine.

ABC initiated the investigation after receiving anonymous complaints pertaining to the manufacture of wine at Skinner's home.

During the past several weeks, undercover agents purchased wine on numerous occasions.

According to the Virginia ABC, Skinner was charged with:
• 3 felony charges for the illegal manufacture of alcoholic beverages,
• 3 charges for maintaining a common nuisance,
• 2 charges for the illegal sale of alcoholic beverages without a license, and
• 1 charge for illegal possession of untaxed distilled spirits (moonshine)

Most states permit homebrewing, allowing 100 gallons of beer per person per year and up to a maximum of 200 gallons per household annually when there are two or more adults over the age of 21 residing in the household.

100 gallons sounds like a lot more than I recall being legal.
Probably varies by state. But that's brewing- distilling is always illegal for private citizens.

True. The 100 gallons is the federal limit, not state. Distilling is always illegal - cause the feds want their taxes.

Well when we all swith to the majic biofuel ethonal- you can get it for 3-5 dollars a gallon. Just re-distill it at home- to get out the color agents and what else they put in there-

They put methanol in it, which is toxic and not readily distillable from ethanol.

In iowa they just put a dye in it, and i think that there is a 30 degree varrient in the boiling points of methanol, ethanol :shrug:

I lived there for a few months about 10 years ago. That place IS ghetto. Some guy was always trying to sell me crack. I found out later that same guy murdered the Chinese food place owners across from my old apartment for 75 bucks about 3 weeks after I moved out. Crazy place.
