Really expensive wine.
    #9255722 -

Has anyone here ever tried really expensive wine? Is there such a difference in taste that the cost could be justified? I saw some stupid story on CNN about the wine served at the G-20 summit costing $500 and it got me thinking about this a little.

I've tried wines that were rated only a few points lower than the one they used that only cost $30 per bottle. It seems that once you get past the 90 point range though, each point adds on about $50-$100 to the cost of the bottle. What makes them SO much better?

I don't think I could even drink this. I'd be too afraid to spill some when I popped the cork. http://www.wine.com/V6/Dom.-de-la-Romanee-Conti--Romanee-Conti-2005/wine/94682/detail.aspx

i mean i know it's all about prestige in the elitist circles. what makes a wine worth $9,000 though? is there a "secret ingredient" or procedure that all the other wines don't have? is it guaranteed to make all the girls who drink it strip down naked and partake in orgies?

Like anything of value, the quality of wine increases with price up to a point.  After that it's all bullshit hype.  You can get a great tasting wine that perfectly augments a meal for $100.  Once the price goes totally insane, the buyers have some psychological issues they haven't dealt with, probably insecurity or power issues--same with cars, houses, boats, etc

Anyone here drink anything more than a $1000 a bottle? until someone does its a little unfair to make those claims. Is there a difference between $60 dollar ounces and $300? to the untrained eye probably not much.

Its more to do with its age and region, because the flavors do change over time and exposure and in certain areas. Its why theres a difference between Cognac, Champaign and Bourbon, they are different regions with different quality and different tastes and production methods. Which effects the wine (or liquor) over all taste and texture on the "pallet".

Its the same reason that as whiskey is aged its price increases.

I have had wine 20 years ago that would be priced at over $1,000.00 today.  I've also had single-malt Scotch that was $60.00 a shot.  And it's palate, not pallet.  A pallet is a is a flat transport structure that supports goods in a stable fashion while being lifted by a forklift.

Really, how could even $100 a bottle be worth it? That's gotta be way past the reasonable point of diminishing returns. I could buy lots of good organic broccoli, like 3 months worth, for that money.

My roommate once got some wine from his girlfriends father. He was just drinking by himself one afternoon. He said, "want a glass?" And I had a couple. Later he found out it was like a $500 bottle (or something ridiculously expensive like that). If he told me he bought it for 20 bucks at a gas station, I would have believed him.

There is not secret ingredient or magic trick to great wine, tons of factors come into play such as the weather that year, age of the vines, harvest time to name some natural factors beyond the human controlled elements. Wine is very very complex, did you know you can get a masters degree for it!

Really any natural food is that complex, but the question is when you take a brain scan of someone drinking a 1k bottle versus someone drinking a 20 dollar bottle, do you see one person's pleasure center on fire with activity while the others' is just barely active? I doubt it, I think its mostly self delusion in thinking that you enjoy it that much more buy reasoning all of the factors that went into it.
