What region of NC are you in? If your near the mountains, then don't expect anything until may, but its still worth a check, especially if unseasonal hot waether comes your way. If your in the piedmont or coastal regions you may have some luck in the coming weeks. Make sure you look in horse shit, like blaze pointed out, Subblaetus is really all that grows in the fields. You may also be able to find Gymnopilus growing from rotting wood, some of which are active. Gyms com in a wide variety of yellows and oranges, and often have a distinct odor, similar to anise (licorice).

I did some further research and came up with this site
Duke Mushrooms

The only psilocybe listed is Psilocybe sylvatica, but I read reports that Cubensis may grow in the coastal regions of the state, and subblaetus most certainly grows across the state.

That mushroom in the pictures is not P. silvatica, which the mycologist also mis-spelled as P. sylvatica.

For comparison see Stamets page 146 of hi P. silvatica. OR mine in my species id guide at my site.

Which is closer to P. pelliculosa.

The Duke Shroom is misidentified.

It has been reported from New York but not from the location of North Carolina.

Yes certainly not P. silvatica, perhaps the mycologist was not familiar with the species and attempted naming it. Sylvatica, is from the latin root Sylva which means forest. My guess would P. caerulipes, which is known throughout the eastern states according to Stamets (p 105).

That is not P. caerulipes which has a pure whitish stem that stains blue.

Someone from Ohio posrted several pictures here a few years ago of P. caerulipes. Those shrooms in the Duke files may or may not be a Psilocybe, possibly a non-active one, but I suspect it is another genera from Psilocybe.

They looked similar to the first picture of P. Caerulipes in Stamets' book. I seriously doubt that a Duke mycology student would do such a horrible job of identification (not even getting the genera) with all the resources and equipment available at the university.

If you notice the vast difference between the first picture of Pauls and the second those are two different shrooms. The ones you refer to are bell shaped not convex to flat in age. The caerulipes also get wavy caps in age.. The reddish brown caps of the first pictures do not come anywhere near those in the secoind image in Paul's book. This is just another eror in Paul's book,.

He has been notified of errors for many years, not only in the Psilocybine mushrooms of hte world book but several errors in the mushroom cultivator which he has never corrected. To do so means a lot of money to change the pages and the plates used to print the books.

Paul also erred ont he ID of my shroom opf Psilocybe samuiensis whichis P. samuinsis Guzm?n, Bandala and Allen.

Paul listed my shroom As: Psilocybe samuiensis Guzm?n, Allen and Merlin.

There are many other mistakes as is the P. papilionaceus and others. I do not need to mention them since they are not pertinent to the post here.

Here is a few images of P. caerulipes form the state of Ohio ner North Canton.

The season for P. caerulipes is from June through August.
