hi everybody im new to the sit and just wanted to say that this is a great site i have enjoyed mushrooms for years but have always wanted to know how to find them and identify them i have about a 60 acre cow pasture that i am allowed to be in and about a month back i was raining alot and i decided to go and see what was growing and found probably thousands of small baby mushrooms and was wondering if someone could help me identify them did not have a camera at the time sorry

habitate: southeastern Piedmont NC, cow pasture just rained the day before they were growing on pieces of cow dung you could actually pick a piece up and there was about 6 to 10 on that one small piece most of them were growing in shade under alot of trees oak, maple, and i think some pine trees

gills:  look to be a medium brown color close together

stem: light tan wasn't really thick but not thin, solid and no more than an inch long

cap: dark tannish brown smooth lighter around the edges no color change when drying

spore print: N/A

did not notice any bruising

i know this isn't much to go on and i appreciate the help im waiting for it to rain again so i can go take a few pics now that i have a camera

I am not sure, but I do not think you have any active mushrooms that grow in dung in your area. I think you should be looking around the soil and/or rotted wood. Wait for someone who knows your area a bit better to help out.

i am in  the peidmont also and i have seen those tiny mushrooms on cow dung.  i dont know what they are but i know they are not psilocybes.  psilocybe cubensis is the only cow dung mushroom that would be growing around here and it is rarely found in the peidmont and mostly on the coast.  but you can study panaeolus subbalteatus which is a dung mushroom found in horse dung or newly sodded grass . and that is found here . and you can study gymnopilus luteofolius and gym... aeruginosus. those are harder to identify and have deadly lookalikes. panaeolus foensecci is very common here and is inactive but is good practice for identifiying . but mostly in the spring.

A donkey is just another horse. So yes, donkey dung is equally fine, just not cow dung.
