Bright orange/yellow mushrooms in NC?
    #5650494 - 05/19/06 02:26 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

First let me begin by apologizing for what is about to be a vague description.

AFOAF was in the woods of the peidmont of NC on a journey with a good buddy. While on the trip, he randomly found tiny, vibrant orangish yellowish mushrooms. They were growing on the forest floor, not wood.

They weren't clustered, more individual growth; and they were about .5-1" tall, with a flat/mature cap about .5" across, and a very skinny stem of maybe 1-2 cm diameter. He cannot remember the color of the gills, however he knows the caps and stems were the same color, so it seems as though the gills would be as well.

Due to the nature of the situation in which they were found, it wasn't practical to keep any to get photos or a spore print. Again, sorry for the lack of pictures, spore print, etc, but do any of you think you might be able to ID with what I've been able to give? Thanks taking the time.

I am going to guess Hygrophorous. They are all over the place in the piedmont of NC, and they match that description. I typically see hundreds of them, but they are never clustered close together.

I haven't yet taken the time to ID the ones I see to species. They are not active, and unlikely to be edible. But they are very cool to look at.
