Re: I was cleaning my bags when it came to me

The more substrate = more prone to contamination. Plus, how do you plan to sterilize a ziplock bag?

I tried a large spawn bag and had to throw it out..

The girl he had dragged along to the pub with him had grown to loathe him dearly over the last hour, and it would probably have been a great satisfaction to her to know that in a minute and a half or so he would suddenly evaporate into a whiff of hydrogen, ozone, and carbon monoxide. However, when the moment came she would be too busy evaporating herself to notice it.

I have heard of spawn bags before I think I saw them for sale at fungi perfecti and never though to try them because I have been very seccessful with the jars. Are they to be used instead of jars? Are they better than jars? Can anyone clarify what their purpose is. Thanks.

You can replace the jars with spawn bags, but most people still use jars(at least I do) to start from spore. The main function of a spawn bag is in its name. They are used to spawn fully colonized substrate to other mediums like straw, dung, compost etc...Basically they are for bulk growing.

Way less jars to wash when you use spawn bags!

ok I made my filter patch ZIPLOCK spawn bag and it was a little harder than I thought, but in the process I was struck with this thought. Paul Stamets suggests that you need 5,000-10,000 ppm CO2 content for spawn running in psilocybe cubensis mushrooms with zero fresh air exchange. So I asked myself the question, why even have the filter patch at all why not just use ziplock bags by themselves? I will post my results as the develop. If any one else out there uses filter patch bags please try this experiment with me so that we may have more than one result with which to draw info from. Thank you

vts1134-you said you were "cleaning" your spawn bag? Do you reuse them? Why? I use both bags and bottles but I have never reused the bags. I get them for about $.18 a piece and can't see risking a batch trying to reuse them. Do yours get a littly "hard" or stiff after autoclaving them? Still very flexible but not like new? I like the bag because they are easier to break up the spawn in and to mix spawn evenly when added to substrate. But wouldn't give away my bottles for nothing.

Chester where do you get bags for $.18? I pay about 85 for mine. And I do not like wasting ANYTHING that I don't have to. I simply soak them in soapy bleach water for about an hour and rise and they are as good as new. Well except for the fact that they are a little shorter every time I reuse them due to the impulse seal every time and that is why I wanted to use ziploc bags instead.

vts1134, I get mine from www.unicornbags.com and they are great. About 12 different sizes and styles to choose from. They can even put different rates of filters in. Last time I ordered, it was $180.00 for a 1000 pleated bags, I think they are 5x8x21 in size. Good people and their bags dont get hard and develop pinholes like the ones I have gotten from FungiPerfecti. If that is too many to order, I'm sure some of your trusted friends will go in with you once they realize how convenient bags can be.
