That book was a GREAT fucking read!

My hyper-liberal Aunt was ranting about it and had the spark of God in her eye when I visited and told her I read it.

My ex also attempted to read it to try to look smart, but quit and started doing blow and fucking a Bosnian.

Sensemaking: stuff happens, we don't understand, so we make up a story that sounds plausible. Is it the truth? Who cares. There's as many truths as you want there to be.

Klein's hypothesis in The Shock Doctrine is that there is a system in place, run by a select group of actors, that purposefully builds political and economical power using the dependency and confusion that results from major disasters, and so uses the effects of disasters to manipulate groups of people and even nations. Note that I write 'purposefully': Klein attaches intentionality to the chain of events that in her view tends to follow large socio-economic disruptions. Assuming this intentionality is a form of sensemaking: it is supposing that there is indeed a specific actor or stakeholder that is capable of steering events to serve its own ulterior motives.

Another view could be that there is no intentionality, but emergent properties of the large-scale socio-economical/political system that result in a tendency to spiral down towards a certain outcome ('goal-seeking behavior'). This latter view does not make the assumption that there is intentionality, and hence relies on other mechanisms to describe exactly the same chain of events.

Which view is correct? Is either one wrong, or are they both right? Is there such a thing as a singular, identifiable truth? That is what I was getting at.

oh. well with things as obvious as these there's a pretty strong paper trail, and fuck, the people involved dont even try to hide it. it's not that she's making it up to fit her viewpoint, it has always been there people just dont give a shit.
