Any tips for breaking in Docs?

Ive just got a pair of cherry red doc martins and not only are they killing my feet but they look slightly silly at times. I really love them but shiny, shiny, shiny cherry that glares in peoples eyes is not what I want to be stuck with for too much longer. They need to loose their glossyness.
How do people beat up their boots to make them look cooler?

Wear them in the rain. Leave them on the heater vent to dry. Repeat.

go hiking and get mud all the way up to the top of the boots works best in the spring though. after winter you forget that the ground next to streams isnt hard anymore lol. or as a preemptive measure get them second hand

the thing about docs is that they last forever so all those docs you see that look so worn and broken in are probably a year or two old. docs last forever.

I bought the ones I have on right now when I was like, 16.
The day I bought them, I wore them to OzzFest. I think I had scars on my feet for years...
Best boots ever though...

Have you tried using mink oil to soften them up? That helps break them in faster, and protects them from water and dirt and shit.

Soak them in water. Beat them with a baseball bat. Let dry. Repeat

yeah, use mink oil.
but the docs of today are not the same as the old ones. They are not manufactured in England anymore and are actually inferior to how they used to be. The new docs will not last as long as the old ones.

I too have noticed that. I bought my first docs in '96, and they lasted until around 2002. The ones I bought four years ago are starting to fall apart, like the sole is coming disconnected from the heel. Bullshit. I wish they made docs like they used to.

from the bottom of my sole: "oil, fat, acid, petrol, alkali, resistant"
my 1st pair of docs lasted soo long the leather on the toe wore thru to expose the steel toe. 2nd pair lasted soo long a hole was eventually exposed in the heel. im on my 3rd pair now, just bought them in august i believe. the only way i broke them in by is by just wearing them, painful none the less, but theyre all good now.

just because it says it on the sole doesnt mean anything. the docs of today are inferior (made in china?), so I would not trust them to meet such standards as well as they should.

Docs are primo. Mine are really comfortable now that they've been thoroughly broken in. The only problem is that I scuff my heels when I walk, and the soles at the hell have worn thin, thus opening the air pockets at the rear.
Great shoes though
