Polls are done on a small segment of the population, but with any decent poll, a wide variety of races, social groups, and ages are all polled, so that a good perspective can be given. Several thousand people are probably asked. There's no way you can poll everyone, and it's retarded to claim that these polls are inaccurate just because they haven't polled the majority of people. That is impossible, and a completely unrealistic standard to hold the pollsters to.
In all likelyhood, these numbers are fairly accurate.

Maybe it's naive to believe that polling of such a small segment of the population can be accurate? It's truly amazing how some can take so much on faith.

no, it's naive to think that the majority of the population could be polled.

Since you replied to me I presume that you believe that I suggested that everyone be polled. I did not make such a statement.

It's a wide array of people. Sure it can't be 100% accurate, but if you survey a wide variety of people across the nation you're going to get a good idea of what people think.
The odds that a well conducted poll will be wildly inaccurate are like the odds of winning the lottery.

I'm not a statistician so I could not agree with nor disagree with your statement. I just prefer verifiable facts.

I bet that number would be greatly reduced if it was polled in a wide range of people in California. I still have yet to meet a person from my town who supports the war.

I live in Georgia and I know almost no one who does not support the war. So just because those around you don't support it does not mean that these polls are wrong.

Either they are or they are not. Things like "in all likelyhood" and "fairly accurate" suggest that they may not be accurate. Yet anyone who says that these polls are inaccurate is retarded?

I disagree...
in my second statistics related reply post of the day- I'd like to say that we dont have enough information about how the data was collected to use them to determine how the country feels about the war. The numbers are useless...

The numbers were gathered in exactly the same way that all public opinion polls have been run for decades now. Anyone who says this poll is invalid necessarily concedes that ALL public opinion polls are invalid, because they are all run the same way, by the same three or four polling organizations who use exactly the same methods. pinky

Which set of statistics are we talking about? I disagree that all public opinion polls are invalid. Many are, as they rely on convenience sampling. Polls conducted by government organizations through census data are much more accurate, depending on the nature of the questionnaire.

TheCaptain writes:

All of them.
Polls conducted by government organizations through census data are much more accurate, depending on the nature of the questionnaire.
And since there has been no such governmental census poll conducted that has asked any questions regarding approval or disapproval of the war, the point is moot.
