Boring Winter Mushroom
    #14045357 - 02/28/11 09:17 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Late winter is always characterized by obsessing over mushrooms that would normally be passed by.

I ID'ed this out to be Crepidotus crocophyllus, but I'm not entirely sure.

Important details:
Cap: margin minutely hairy, faded to an off-white color after drying.
Spore Print: "Pale piss-stain yellow"

It's not boring... it's a cool mushroom

Did it smell bad? I'd call it Phyllotopsis nidulans

Crepidotus spp. should have a brown spore print, whereas P. nidulans has a pale 'apricot' print.

"Phyllotopsis nidulans is said by most authors to have a foul odor, at least when it is growing on hardwoods. My collections, on red pine and on willow, have been odorless." - Michael Kuo

Looks like its growing from hardwood but still a interesting side note.

Sorry, forgot to include those details!

It smelled like a normal mushroom. *edit* by normal I mean like store-bought agaricus mushrooms.

It was growing from hardwood. I'm not good with trees so I don't know exactly what hardwood it was.

Is that on cloth or paper towel?

It looks like a stain rather than a spore print to me:shrug:

Try printing on foil next time.  Its easier to see the print.

Right, tissues are for sneezing, not for spore prints.

P. nidulans looks good, thanks everyone!
