Trouble whith shiitake and coir
    #13781867 -

Just realized that coir is bad substrate for shiitake, I have one tub spawned recent on coir/verm with Damion`s Tek, Can I do something for to reach fructify.

I have about three dozen shiitake strains and they all hate coir.  You want sawdust, or a combination of straw and sawdust for shiitake.

First of all thank you, I´m in process of isolation and added a box of bamboo toothpicks on top. The bucket is all colonized but in the coir myc is very thin and on the toothpicks is very dense (still not entirely colonized). I'm wondering if myc will turn dense in coir or not because I don´t know if have to birth it or just open the lid when it´s 100% colonized. Any help is wellcome.

No, that looks like the very first signs of colonization.  It appears you also have a shiitake strain which hates coir.

Coir was colonized 100% in ten days but very very thin, leaving plenty of space between hifas, in the pic don´t appreciate it :frown: I know shiitake hate coir but I will try to fruit this bucket, Should I leave colonize more time?

you could see all progress here

Really, straw and sawdust? Interesting, I will try that....

EDIT: Upon closer inspection, RR is correct, those are not pins.  When the image is small, it looks like there are stems attached to them.  I like to let my Shiitake blocks brown just a little before fruiting, but from what I can see in the pics everything looks ok.  FYI most Shiitakes need 50-65F temps and 95-100% RH to pin correctly.  There are, of course, some strains that will tolerate warmer temps, such as Aloha's Shiitake 75.  Where is this particular Shiitake strain from?  I've found Sporeworks' strain does best if you wait around 35-45 days after inoculation to initiate fruiting.  Stamets' Shiitakes are similar, though his "Solstice Strain" will fruit two weeks after inoculation!

*EDITED FOR CLARIFICATION

I see dark spots, but no pins.  Hopefully you'll get lucky, but don't count on it.

:mjk: Well, after five days cold shook and a week in my greenhouse there are 2 shrooms growing in vitro!! now the trouble is that I broke the block birthing it and inside seems that myc is very thin colonized. I have embedded as I could. :awedance:

I never really had much luck at all with shiitake on coir.  I gave up using it at all.

I've noticed the thinner myc inside colonized blocks as well.  I think the myc that isn't exposed to elements has no need to thicken, brown and get tough, so I guess it doesn't.  My theory is it stays fine and wispy like the myc you see when grain is 1st starting to colonize - thin, transparent and gossamerish(tm).
