Shiitake BRF Growlog Complete - Many Large Pictures. 10

Greetings,
This is my first post on this particular forum, though I've been a lurker for the better part of a decade. I figured the best way to get started off with the community is to share, so I hope you all enjoy! I originally attempted to post in Grow Logs, but I don't have enough posts yet. Let me know if it would have been better posted elsewhere....
I have definitely pioneered here a little bit, but bare with me - I am happy with my results so far. I'm in no way an expert, so your milage may vary. I am very pleased with my results using this method and that's all that matters for any grower at the end of any grow!
Still, I am always on the lookout for way to improve my methods. Any and all suggestions, advice, commentary, etc is welcome.
Method: Calssic BRF Tek
inoculation: Honey Liquid Culture (200ml/4%)
Special Ingredients: Generic Wooden Kabob Skewers
Substrate: -1/2 Vermiculite -1/4 BRF -1/4 Ground Wild Bird Seed -7 "1 and 1/2 inch" kabob skewers /jar
Proceedure: 1.)Mix all substrate components. 2.)Saturate, mix and squeeze by hand until field capacity. 3.)Load all jars as per standard BRF Tek. 4.)Insert 6+ "1 and 1/2" inch sections of wooden skewer to each jar. 5.)Pressure cook all jars for 90 minutes. 6.)Once cool, inoculate and wait. 7.)Once bark begins to appear, place jars in the fridge for 5 days. 8.)On the final night in the fridge, dunk for 24 hours (again in the fridge). 9.)After dunk, birth and roll/double-end case/etc. 10.)Mist, air, harvest and enjoy!
Time Frames: Colonization - 12/14/2009 to 1/4/2101 (about 3 weeks until "bark" spots appear). Consolidation Time - 1/4 to 1/9 (this is the one week after bark appears). Cold Shocked - 1/9 to 1/16 (Dunked on final night). Brith Date - 1/16 Pin Date - 1/19 Harvest and Dinner - 1/25
Notes: -I like to soak my sewers in advance in cofee. -I use dilute coffee in ALL of the water I use in preparing my substrate. -I only used 7 "inch and a half" sections of skewer per jar. I believe that shiitake doesn't require as much wood as people would believe. -Wife and I aired frequently and misted HEAVILY at least 6 times a day. -Shiitakes are really yummy.
Seriously, this was EASY! Anyone who is interested in learning to grow, this is an awesome way to start out. It is EXACTLY like growing the "more popular" variety of mushrooms with the exception of the cold shock in teh fridge - no biggie. They taste much better too, imho.

Very nice! i want to start a shiitake grow soon but i am going to try replacing the brown rice flower with saw dust. Did you start from spores? i have access to freshly grown shiitake so i may try growing them from spore. Nice grow by the way!

I started with a LC syringe from a Shroomery "Preferred Vendor". I was going to go the sawdust route too originally. I had things worked out with a guy at Home Depot, but when I went to pick it up he wasn't there. The other guy I asked flat-out told me "no". Hence the wooden skewers.
I wasn't hoping for very good results, but I was determined to begin my grow without delay. The skewers for the kabobs went right into the jars. I now believe that shiitake doesn't require as much wood as some folks believe.

Haha, maybe next time! This time around we picked enough for my family - the four of us, two little ones. That 10oz was a little more than half the total mass of shiitake's from this flush, to eyeball it. Out of 12 cakes, it looks like I'll net over a pound wet on a single flush - and two of my cakes were very weak producers. I'll know for sure once the remainder of this flush matures.
I never expected this much yeild. Does anyone know if this is typical?

Please use your 'Pics' button in the top left of each page to post pictures so you can put thumbnails up. If you add files from the bottom of the page it puts the whole picture up and those of us such as myself with no access to high speed internet can't even see them. I really wish I could get broadband, but it's not available. RR

Actually, I don't think I can correct it... or at least I don't know how. There were limits in place that prevented me from using my Shroomery gallery. I put them up on another photo site and linked from there. If there is a way to fix it, let me know and I will.

If you havent uploaded anything you should be able to do so.
Click Pictures near the top of the screen under where it says 'Welcome....HUNGRY'
You have a choice of five options, click the first one Upload Picture upload for username will come up and below it says Image 1: browse. Click browse and find you picture location on you PC and open them when the 'file upload' box comes up. Do this for all your pics then click Upload
A small box will come up with a blue progress bar and when its done it will show you all your pics with a code [url][image]blahblahblah[url/] or similar copy the codes into a post and youre done.
If you done a multi upload at the bottom you can copy all codes at once.

Thanks guys. I hope more people give it a shot because it was really easy and I think there are a lot of new avenues to explore in clutivating them. I only found a few good growlogs on shiitake BRF cakes for example. I'm going to try a larger substrate block next time because it looks like shiitakes can fruit much larger than these from cakes. They're delicious, so I think I might have to stick with shiitakes for a while. I just read that spent shiitake substrate makes a great base substrate for oysters, so I might look into growing them too.

Ok.. final total weight was 21oz wet! Really, it's not as much as it sounds since I weighed them with the stems. If I weighed only the caps I'm sure it would be a lot less. I actually like eating the stems. I dip them raw in dip just like celery. My wife is also going to make stock from the rest. It's all good to me.
