15 cups hardwood sawdust
2 cups rice or wheat bran
1 cup gypsum
15 cups hardwood chips(optional)

This recipe will fill two large spawn bags 1/2 full, or one spawn bag if you skip the chips. Block size will be five to seven pounds.

Mix the dry sawdust with the dry bran and gypsum, then slowly add water until when you squeeze as hard as you can, no water, or at most just a few drops of water come out. (Note that this is less than the field capacity measurement we use with compost and casing material.) Then, mix with the woodchips and bag it up. Be sure to soak the woodchips overnight, or boil them for one hour to hydrate. The woodchips are optional with Shiitake. You'll get more flushes with chips provided trichoderma doesn't decide to take up residence. If it does, it will just be on the surface of the wood. If you catch it early enough, you can wipe it off with a salt brine soaked q-tip.

Yup, I'll move this to the gourmet and edible forum.

How much do shitake sell for, and are they still a kinda rare mushroom in most places??

As well as how much do they tend to yield for a recipe like above? Just rough numbers nothing exact!

I have no experience with them is why I ask!

hi roger.

I see you're using wheat or rice bran for your substrate. I've got access to oat bran, and seem to remember stamets recommending it - don't have the book anymore though, so can't verify that.

Do you reckon there's any difference between wheat/rice and oat bran?

also, read a thread last week about sawdust and wood shavings, do you reckon wood shavings would work (just to space a mix out a bit) if mixed in with sawdust? Just got a binbags worth from an oak mill the other day (and one of course sawdust as well).

Shiitake sell for fifteen dollars a pound in my area. That's about $4 per mushroom if you can grow some big ones.

Oat bran works fine, but is often more expensive than wheat bran. Just be sure to add some kind of cereal grains to the sawdust. It will pay for itself many times over. Many growers skip the supplimentation, and then wonder why yields are poor.

I've never done well with shavings. They're too thin to give the mycelium much energy, and there's too much distance between them as well. If you got a bunch of free shavings, I'd smash them up well with a weed eater, hammer, lawnmower or whatever, then use them like/along with sawdust.

I bought a pound of shiitake for 4 dollars here in my freinds store... disocunt of course  but anyways, I was going to take a stem tissue sample with a needle and put it into the LC but I'm having trouble finding the recipe with caro... My spores of P. Cub. didnt germinate in it so I'm wondering if my recipe would work for the shiitake... Got a good caro recipe using cups? Lol.

4 cups is pretty high amount of caro for 10 cups a half of a cup
would work better with 10 cups of water.

Thanks! This is like a week old post but I'm glad you said that. One LC got contamed and one seems to maybe make progress like smallll tiny things that are pure white are coming off the peice that looks like myc. I havent had these in an incubator but in a room that has an avrg. temp of about 65 degrees farenheit so I just threw my good LC in my incubator wich is a good 84 degrees. I'll make sure to post a grow log if all goes well!

Roger

How long do you pressure cook a block of this size for?

Thanks

The recipe I gave above fills two of the large gusseted spawn bags. My AA 921 can hold four of those, but it's filled all the way to the lid. I put a glass dinner plate on top of the bags, and use the rings from jar lids as spacers to allow room for steam to penetrate around and between the bags. As long as steam can penetrate all the way around each bag, 2 hours is plenty.
