Oysters on Coir?
    #6655220 -

I wish to do a bulk Oyster grow and have not had any luck finding straw locally. I have extra coir and was wondering if I could use it for growing Oysters. Did a search and didn't see anything about it in this forum. Would coir work?

Thanks,
AOLSD

I don't know man, I've wondered the same thing...get a few tons of coir from India ever few weeks or so if it was worth it...

As far as straw, did you try any feed stores? they always have it in stock around here.

For something that is supposed to be better than straw, maybe you can contact local extension agencies and find a source of cotton seed hulls, they're supposed to be one of the best subs for oysters, from what I understand (never used them myself, as they're hard to come by in Florida)

I mixed a pint of rye spawn with a couple quarts of coir and a bit of lime in a plastic bag with a few air holes. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

This is a 50/50 mix of coir and spent coffee grinds.

I tried yellow oyster and Shiitakes on pure coco brick substrate.

The yellow oyster did not colonize it at all. The shiitake colinized it nicely in 4 weeks but after incubation for 4 more weeks failed to produce any fruitingbodies.

I didn't have any luck with coir either.

I learned the hard way that shiitake won't fruit on coir. I tried for over a year, when I mentioned it in a thread when John Holliday of alohamedicinals.com was still posting here and he set me straight. They also tried to fruit shiitake on coir and found it simply hates the stuff.

I've never tried oysters on pure coir, but they certainly like the combination of coffee grinds and coir, as does reishi. Hericium(lion's mane) also does well on coir/coffee grinds.

Should work. I have seen other mushroom grown on coir. Just add extra spawn to it.

Yeah the plain coir did not colonize - only growth was very close to individual pieces of grain.
