State-sanctioned medical treatment?
    #13899465 -

When should the government's belief about medical treatment supercede that of the parents of a sick or injured child?

And should parents be prosecuted for failure to comply?

that is such a tricky subject when it comes to the people who believe in magic. There are the people that think they can pray to a wizard or don't believe in getting a transfusion of blood to heal something that could be taken care of rather simply. So tricky but honestly if the parents are that dumb the kids are probably pretty dumb too so let them die.

But what about when the state believes in magic as is evidenced by earlier medical beliefs such as blood-letting?

What if you were part of an Indian tribe and didn't believe that shaking a rattle and blowing smoke would help your child?

I'd demand to see a study.  By the way, have we seen a study that establishes that it is harmful to slap people who ask stupid questions?  I posit that it may provide a public benefit enhances the general welfare.

What's the difference between the govt and the family?  Serious question.

Gov't beliefs = majority or average of most family's beliefs

Family beliefs = minority belief which may or may not differ from the majority

I've wondered about this. If your kid was born with an extra thumb, would you have it removed? I probably wouldn't.

Let me slow this down for you.

All families are governments.
Not all governments are families.
No trees are planets
No planets are trees

I don't care.  Incite away.  The only person responsible for my response to your incitement is me.

Studies need interpretation, and especially in the past, and still today, much of medicine has incomplete or absent evidence as to efficacy.  Asking for a study only pushes the issue one increment down the line, a decision still needs to be made on the study.

I think a more useful question would be when may their needs supercede those of the parents of the sick child.

I would think the answer should be when the sick child disagrees with the parents and the govenrment intends to facilitate treatment the sick child wants.

Also when the sick child is incompotent to come to a decision regarding the matter and the parents have no justified evidence in the efficacy of their chosen course and the government does have such for their chosen course.

The standards for a compotent child should be much lower than perhaps usually thought, however- certainly a forteen year old child should be compotent in such a case, usually.  I would think clear and convincing evidence that the government's treatment would help or that it may help and is part of the standard of care for that condition whilst the parents' treatment has no demonstrable efficacy approaching that of the government's treatment.

We should get away from treating children like incompotents, in my opinion, and stop treating parents as their owners.  If the kid believes jesus will save him and understands the situation, then let him choose.

And should parents be prosecuted for failure to comply?

Well, the Indian Council had thousands of years of historical 'evidence' for the efficacy of sage brush and rattles.

It isn't necessary to imagine the world ending in fire or ice. There are two other possibilities: one is paperwork, and the other is nostalgia.
