Admiring Foolishness
    #13826589 -

"Wow! He charged that machine gun nest with only a bayonet." :congrats:

We admire football players that destroy their knees, war 'heroes' that come home missing a limb or in a body bag, boxers that damage their brains, rednecks that drive around in an oval at unsafe speeds and so on.

Seems we have a fear of getting hurt or killed instinct for a reason. Is it truly noteworthy that some people can ignore their survival programming?

Diploid made the point awhile ago that it's stupid how people generally admire those who damage themselves while playing sports, and look down on those who damage themselves as a result of using drugs; both sports and drug usage are recreational activities, so why the double-standard?

Simple answer: no.

It's one thing to simply enjoy a style of life that one enjoys, but it's another thing altogether to refer to another person's choice as "wrong" or to rationalize their behavior as being pathological or resulting from some sort of inadequacy or failing so as to create a sense of superiority or separation as yet another projection of a personal fear or control issue.

With the simple answer, we must then lock the thread. So how about the convoluted, double-speakian, obsfucated, highly cryptic answer?

Hey, at least that Utah State Trooper that put a triple tap into that homeowner's heart two days ago in a home break-in
protected the drug user from doing future harm to himself.

The admiration stems not solely from the observation of physical sacrifice, but from the heart or will that the individual uses to continue on through pain. Of your examples, I would not say any of them are admirable on their own, it depends on the differentiation between whether it is perceived as an act of courage or foolishness.

admiring might just be replaced with... interested in... in their risky acts and etc, we are drama queens and very often bored so we need vicarious experiences to escape the humdrum of the 9-5

or somethin...

Thank you, Captain Obvious. You and Poid have both conspired to kill a very weak topic.

If you tell someone how cool they are for taking a risk then you don't have to. Sounds like a great strategy to me.
