SGFC + fanning;
    #13788769 - 01/14/11 10:09 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

This will be my first grow and I'm just about ready to inoculate.  I have a basic SGFC and will be using the PF/cake tek.  I have searched for an answer, but haven't found what I'm looking for.

It's my understanding that even with a SGFC you need to fan daily.  If this is correct, I am in a bit of a pickle.  During the time that my shrooms should be fruiting, I will be absent for 2-3 days.

How badly will 2-3 days of no fanning/misting hinder my grow?
Would it be possible to leave the lid slightly ajar, add a few extra holes, or something?

You should be alright.

How many cakes/How large of a SG are we talking?

2-3 days shouldnt be a problem in a properly constructed sg.
i would use an oscilating fan or a cieling fan on low, for fae.
good luck!

Good to know, thanks!

It will be 6-8 cakes for my first grow.. I'm leaning towards 6 just in case I mess it up somehow.  If all goes well, I will be upping my cakes for the next grow (already have the spores for it)- I will have to be absent for 2-3 days during that grow as well.

The SGFC is a 64-quart box.

How do u know u will be gone when it's fruiting when u haven't even inoculated yet? Mushrooms vary alot on many different levels, it could take a week in a half could take a month to colonize. Nobody knows for sure.

Well, I take a trip for about 2-3 days every two weeks or so.. so whether it takes a week and a half or a month to colonize, I will most likely be absent during part of the fruiting phase.

Properly constructed shotgun terrariums will be fine during that time.  Don't run a fan or ceiling fan in the room with a shotgun terrarium.  They'll force air in through the wrong holes and dry out the air inside.

I wanted to add that I have found more cakes is better than less.

It seems that with more cakes they help each other keep up the RH as
they lose moisture.

I put 28 cakes in my SGFC and they went crazy.

(It got hard to separate them as the fruits grew)

Good luck,

JD

What if the OP has his FC in a room with no air circulation? (closed door, no heater/AC in the room) would they benefit from a fan in that scenario, or do you not recommend a fan in a room regardless, even if not pointed near the FC?

No fans and no closets.  In a normal sized bedroom or larger, there is always circulation.  One should also always leave a window cracked open slightly for fresh air.  My windows are always open slightly, even when it's thirty degrees below zero outside.

That's interesting to hear.. maybe I will just go ahead and inoculate as many cakes as I can with one syringe and throw them in.  I want to save my other two syringes for experimenting with other ways of growing.

sometimes a beginner in this feild is forced to work out of closet for various issues, and circulation can be a down fall to that. If one must work out of a closet it is productive to surround ur grow with a zip up portable cloth closet inside of the closet u allready have, then with the air restrictions of the cloth u can safly run a rotating fan in general areas with ur norml closet door open the cloth closet will also serve as a barrier but not a filter for contams.

I'm not going to advise how to to things the wrong way.  Fresh air is the number one pinning trigger.  You don't get that in closets, nor do you get fresh air by surrounding a grow with plastic and running a fan to blow the same stale air on your project, making it worse.

Use a shotgun terrarium in a normal sized room, out in the open.  Try inoculating a few of your cakes with oyster mushrooms.  Pick them and cook up for dinner.  There's no reason to hide a legal mushroom grow.

RR  i respect your word but i am not talking about a plastic closet its cloth it circulates and u are very lucky to have quarters where you can maintain an fc in plain veiw with out catching any greif from the old lady
