A Fan, a Timer & a really good plan- Need help
    #363527 - 07/30/01 11:43 AM (23 years, 1 month ago)

Hi Kids,
A friend wanted to ask;
We all know about the deadly results of not enough air exchange, and in order to circumvent these probs, she is going to use a small CPU fan hooked up to a Timer. The only problem is, once she shuts up the tank, she doesnt want to open it again, and again.

The question is; How many times a day should she have the fan running?

She was thinking once an hour in 7 minute intervals. Is this too much? Too little?

The fan is very weak, hooked it up to a low output AC Adaptor.

Also, would dropping a hose in, so small amounts of sterile water ,could be added to perlite floor to boost lagging humidity be a good idea as well?

- All replies will be greatly appreciated.

Not knowing and not seeing is a bitch.
All I use is a dual aqarium fish pump stick the hose and let pump air in I have never had a problem.
I think adding a hose so you can add water to the perlite is a fine Idea.
Not knowing about your fan I say this blindly a fan will move a quite a bit of air and may make your humidity to low I would experiment with it first and check the humidity every hour to see what it maintaines threw otu the day.

The best amount of air exchange is to completely replace the air in the terrarium 2-3 times every hour. To do it properly with a fan you need to figure out how much air the fan can displace and you need to know the volume of air in your terrarium. Then you can do the calculations to figure how long and how often you need your fan to be turned on.
For example:

If you had a fan capable of 3.5cfm(cubic feet per minute) and a terrarium with 7 cubic feet of air(tiny chamber but its easy for calc) then you would need the fan to be on for 2minutes every 30min.

I don't care about jack shit, I just wanna pick my nose!!!

mushrooms that are in the wild get 24 hour air exchange. if you can make sure that the air that the fan is blowing in is clean then you could have it on 24/7. make some type of chamber for it.

i may, fucking drop something natural somewhere and it might grow into another piece of shit like you. i dont recognize any of you fucking people, youre not real, you came out of comic books.

Im sorry but doesnt 24/7 fanning kinda kill the humidity? I have a 6" induction fan hooked up to a timer thats set at 6 hour intervals...30 minutes at a time. Works for me! :)

Im inclined to agree with you. I also thought a fan running 24/7 would inhibit humidity. But I also dont want stagnation.
I will relay all your advice, and we'll see how it grows, or goes, whichever-Thanks
