Casings or Cakes....
    #1378751 - 03/15/03 05:59 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

This is a question for a bran new beginner to the mushroom growing experience. What would you suggest: Doing casings or cakes? Obviously casings give you more yeild but require extra work and such, where as cakes are simpler and provide less yeild....but generally for a beginner which would you shroomers suggest?

for begginers I always suggest cakes, not only because they are easier but also I think it is a part of the whole experience. But if you feel confident enough that you can suceed using casings, feel free to do so. Maybe do a half and half like alot of people try.

After a couple of flushes from the cakes, they can be cased. Look in the FAQ. This way you could experiment w/ both.

if you enjoy the hobby you'll enjoy the extra work to make casings. it's worth it.

Is the amount of mushrooms grown significantly more with casings than with cakes or will my friend be satisfied with cakes?

Theoretically, both will produce the same amount since they have equal nutrients. The difference is casings will use up the majority of their nutrients in the first couple flushes, while cakes give off a little here and a litte there, eventually producing so little its not even worth keeping.

My friend has always had problems with his cakes drying out without casing them, but others obviously don't have this problem. Yield seems to be higher with casing.

If you want mushies as fast as possible, birth, dunk in cold, sterile water overnight (the fridge is a good place), and put in your fruiting chamber.

Otherwise, case those cakes! You'll be happy with your results
