Conquering Death * 1
    #13761309 -

Man will never be contented until he conquers death.
--Dr. Bernard Strehler

How unnatural it is to ask, "Why does that which exists, exist?" and yet how completely natural it is to ask, "Why do the living die?"
--Nikolai Fyodorovich Fyodorov

1. Do you think that with eventual advances in technology we will be able to halt aging and become immortal, barring accidents?

2. What would such a discovery do to society?  What major changes would you expect to happen?

3. Would you opt into this form of immortality, or would you want to experience death?

Give me liberty or give me death.  There is only the liberty of death.  It may be frightening but it looks much better than eternal life. Talk about being between a rock and a hard place.

I've thought about this a lot...cause people are living longer and longer nowadays so I don't think it's any stretch of the imagination to see people living for 100+ years regularly at some point in the future. Maybe even 200+ years but I don't know about immortality. Overpopulation? All I know is I'm going to die, and I'm fine with that. Everyone's gotta go sometime, and I kind of WANT to die. Not now, but I imagine death as being just a big sleep. Just non-existence, and I think that will be peace.

I think that this type of technological immortalization will become a reality, but that it will result in antlike automation. Better to die, in my opinion.

I don't see why not.

Eventually Earth would become overpopulated and humans would have to colonize other planets/moons; people would be sexually liberated because the fear of dying from AIDS or some other such STD will be nonexistent. :whacker:

I would opt into that form of immortality, and would also create some sort of armor to protect me from accidents; I don't want to experience death because I don't want to die.

I'd go for extending my life 200+ years, but immortality?  No thanks.  I don't want to be around when the sun explodes into a red giant and engulfs the earth.

What if, by then, humans have already colonized other solar systems? :sunny:

Can you elaborate?  Why would this result in antlike automation?

Very cool article!  Wonder if the treatment will have the same effect on normally aged mice.

Yeah, I think overpopulation (and probably dwindling resources) would become quite significant if we achieve practical immortality.  It also depends on how much the treatment would cost; what if it's only available to the rich?

Then hordes of poor people would take the richies out until the price of the treatment drops significantly. :mob:

In that case, I suppose I could live another thousand, or maybe a million years.  But I don't want to be around when this universe dies a heat death.

Just take into account how much violence and bloodshed has been committed on a mere promise of eternal life via religion; now make that promise an actuality in the here and now.  *shudders*  :rabble:  :machinegun:
