humidification/Air Exchange Setup.
    #1363624 -

I'm looking for improvements/suggestions on a setup.

The setup would include an airpump ( this exact one )

placed in a small 3 gallon rubbermaid tub with wet perlite in the bottom, and a few holes covered with filter disc's on the sides. Then, have that feed into the top of a 10 gallon tub, with standard perlite humidification. (not the lid, but towards the top). The tub would then have an 1"x1" square cut out toward the bottom. This would be for casings. the pump would be on a timer so that would not be runnig constantly.

A few questions i have is
1. how long should it run, how often
2. could the line be connected into 6 (10 gallon) tubs and used effectively.
3. If split, how long should it run. (6x longer?)

Thank you for your time.

If the pump was inside that chamber wouldn't the high humidity get in the machine and mess it up, thats like constant 98rh. I think having the pump inside a filter chamber without perlite and run this into a jar of H2O2 and water inside the terrarium would work good. plus your wording in the above is kinda hard to understand

That setup would work excellent for cakes but casings it would be way too much humidity. Plus one thing to note about running airtubes into different tubs is that i would think they should all be the same length for the same amount of air to be transfered to each container, my friends cat once had a setup similar to this but instead of the jar of H2O2 and water was inside the chamber (that wouldn't be the case if it went to more then one chamber as above) but he had it so it turned on 3 times daily for only 15 minutes, just enough to replicate fanning. The jar would in no way need to supply humidity, it would just be for air exhaust. Your setup is a little bit overkill for casings. With doing casings and going for an "automatic" setup like this you should keep it a little more basic. The Timer on 15 minutes 3 times a day with a filter box is really the only thing needed.

note the "equal length" note

But with the 6 tubs, wouldnt the pump need to be run for 6x as long?

The idea with the jar would be to keep the humidity high as fresh air is pumped in. and most likely it would only be able to get turned on 2x a day. (unless i buy a whole new timer just for it's on/off pins)

If this is used for jsut 1 tub, would it even be nessacary to use the jar at all? so that it would pump directly into the top of the tub.

after i get this down, i will rig up some lighting, but that's the easy part.

theres no way thats going to provide air exchange/humidity for more than 1 container. and having the bubbler insider the terrarium would be a better idea.

what about if thier was some of that easter grass in the jar, and ran it for 6hrs a time?

this would also be combined with standard perlite humidifcation with 1"x1" co2 excape holes. this works fine right now.

but wouldnt the fresh air in the top force the air downward, forcing the co2 out the hole... and since it would be below the casing... the casing should never have much co2 around it?

ok, i got really bored right now, and wrote this up. does anyone disagree with my calculations?
-------------------------------------------------------
Q: How long does the pump need to be on in order to replace all the air in the terrarium?

procedure: Obtain a bag with no holes. I chose a bread bag since they do not usualy have holes (as opposed to grocerie bags). The bag was then tested for air leaks by blowing it up. No leaks detected. The air hose was stuck into the bag to the very end. All the air was 'squeezed' out. The pump was then turned on. The 1500 model air pump took 210 seconds to fill the bag (3m 30s). Obtained an empty 1 gallon milk container. Filled milk jug with water in the bath tub. Poured the water into the bread bag until it reached the same level as when it was filled with air. The bread bag held approxomatly 1 gallon of water. With that, calculations are applied.

Time to fill bread bag:
210 seconds

Bread bag capacity, using water
1 gallon (approx)

# of gallons in tub
10

Time Taken Multiplied by gallons in tub.
210 * 10 = 2100

2100 seconds to completely replace 10 gallons of air.

Multiplied by the amount of tubs
6

2100 x 6 = 12600

12600 seconds to completely replace all 6 tubs of air.

divided by 60 to find # of minutes

12600/60 = 210

210 minutes to replace all air in 6 tubs

divide by 60 to find # of hours.
210/60 = 3.5

3.5 hours to replace all air in 6 tubs

Conclusion: it would take 3.5 hours to exchange all air in 6 tubs.

-------------------------------------------------------
Q: If the pump is left on 24 hours a day, how many times would the air be exchanged?

Hours left on Divided by rate per air exchange.
24/3.5 = 6.8

Conclusion: If the pump is left on 24/7, The air will be replaced an estimated 6.8 times per day.

hmm. the setup was made with 2 tubs (empty 10 gallon). And after the pump ran overnight, the humidity was 99%
