WikiLeaks Medusa

Quote:
A number of WikiLeaks defectors, including founder Julian Assange's former right-hand man, plan to launch a rival site on Monday after accusing Mr Assange of behaving like "some kind of emperor or slave trader".

http://www.smh.com.au/technology/technology-news/anger-at-slave-trader-assange-wikileaks-loyalists-decide-to-break-away-20101210-18s0w.html

I don't see any justification to side with the defectors on this, though I can't say I know all about Assange's motives or behavior towards WikiLeaks staff throughout this shitstorm.. But it sounds to me like his right-hand man got a little jealous.

But even though it's bittersweet, it publicly marks the beginning of a renewed form of journalism. I wonder how many more will come out of the woodwork, what the competition, solidarity, homogenization of these sites will implicate...

The whole thing is blown way out of fucking proportion. I'm quickly tiring of it all. They got the guy who stole the docs, just a kid really and they got assange. Charge the kid for stealing the docs and charge assange for trafficking them, done. The sad part is those things will happen but the punishments will not fit the crime. Neither of those guys have hurt the country as much as some of our war mongering officials of past days. I can think of several people that should be jailed for longer but they are untouchable.

Exactly what I was thinking. Surely our government is smarter, I mean more thoughtful, than me when it comes to national security. Basic common sense says ' this website has stuff we don't want out. Let's get em quietly and be safe again' this has been turned into a spectacle and our government does this anytime it wishes to either lead the sheeple to feel a certain way or they are trying to divert attention. So transparent.

Are you talking about Bradley Manning? That is not primarily where the media attention is coming from right now. They're secondary to the more recent and incremental release of the Embassy cables.

If Manning stole the War docs, he can be imprisoned. Assange can not so easily be charged with anything.

QFT

I like Assange for the fact that he is pushing around alot of the folks who are beyond the grasp of normal ways and means, however.

Anyone get into reading many of the leaked documents? There's one dealing with a wedding in the Caucus mountains, and the shit is just in-fucking-sane. Straight up movie script material.

I strongly suspect the sheeple are being led to welcome the coming censorship of the net. It was a good run fellas.

Assange can be charge with trafficking stolen goods. I'm no anti assange m just saying what I see happening.

It's not really about Assange at all. I'm not making it about him. I started the thread to talk about the proliferation of sites like Wikileaks, way after the media frenzy surrounding Assange has died down.

And also, if anyone wants to post any interesting excerpts, highlights, or discussions about the cables, that's good too.

I've been reading them a bit myself.

what are you talking about?? do you realize what the fuck he is doing/???

in previous years government could go to war and there was NO FUCKING WAY to figure out what they were really up to, you cant sneak a ton of documents out of a top security building.

This guy is giving people who give a fuck some leverage on our dumbass embarassing government. He is taking thier foot and shoving down thier throat. they're trying really hard to shove this under the rug and all it takes a little effort to spread the word about this and see what will happen..

why hate? what else do you hear about on the news that is anywhere near interesting? its all robberies, car crashes, weather  puppet media

no matter how relevant some of the documents are, i dont think the people uploading them were guna sit there for a few hours and maticulously read all of them, they would upload as much as possible and let wikileaks do the work.

how can people be annoyed at this... during the vietnam war people were way more active in protest but couldnt get any real dirt, today we dont do shit, some guy gives us what we need and we shrug out it

whoa, hold up there, Penelope. I'm not hating. I think the whole thing should be dropped and the millionaires in congress and in the cabinets be exposed. The prez really doesn't call the shots perse but they are guilty too. I'm not hating I'm just sayin'. It's being turned into this big ol hairy deal for a reason and I don't trust our governments reasons.

If you guys wanna label me anti assange and all fuck it but atleast think about shit. By assange posting the stolen info he did indeed traffic that stolen info. Did the times do that? Even if they did I don't trust the media either, they wouldn't be prosecuted I'm betting.

Julian Assange is at this point just tabloid fodder. Like any political figure these days. His image has been debased on all fronts, from the smear campaign to the idolatry. They're both superficial, fashionable points of view.

Assange has an exceptional background, but he's a figurehead. I'm interested in what all of this means on the fundamental level.

Yes, the Times did it, as well as Der Spiegel and the UK's Guardian. They were the first three papers to my recollection that received the war logs, and published them with redactions. So far countless papers have published highlights and stories regarding the content of the leaks.

You should know the media, huge mass media anyway is beyond reproach. It's fucked up and not right even a little bit but that's the way shit is. At some point people will unify and fight back. If I were a government pig strategist this would be my primary reason to make the Internet public enemy number one.

I have. Anyone interested in sifting through them for themselves can do so at http://wikileaks.ch. And post anything of interest.
