Anyone who's going to read it has already read it, or will read it when they're good and ready.

There's some foretelling stuff in the book, you can make references like "Big Brother" or "thought criminal" and people have a better conception of where you're coming from....

But it comes nowhere close to the flavor, potency, dimension of how the police state is really unfolding. It is not going to miraculously prepare someone for it.

Stop obsessing over these depictions of dystopias when you're fucking living in one.

Good point. Sad thing is, most people won't think twice about seeing the above poster or watching that ad.

Nineteen Eighty Four is more than just a picture of a dystopia, it examines the psychology of mind control through the perspectives of the citizens, and utilizes characterization to illustrate its points. It offers insight as to how and why people hand over their freedom and their minds. And it's really useful for getting people to think about how it reflects on the world they're living in now.

It has been quoted several times before in the thread.  It is true.  I think a rebellion is in the works.  Just stating the obvious.  What are we?  Living in communist China under Mao Tse Dong?

It's not about more than a Dystopia. Everything that occurs in that book operates inside the Dystopia, as a direct result of it. That's what it is, by definition, inescapable. Imagine a boot stomping on a human face, forever.

I'm not arguing that it isn't a good read, I'm arguing that torrenting, printing and distributing the book is a frivolous idea.

The book is a classic work of fiction that is 51 years old, and is already widely distributed. It can be found at the library, Border's, Barnes & Noble, Waldenbooks, or any book store, anywhere. It's also available to read for free online. I see the more evocative passages you mentioned a dozen times or more per week through usual news & web forum browsing. They're clichéd to death.

If you want to remain conscious of the way the trickery unfolds, you have to improvise and actively watch it, criticize it. Not believe you know what it looks like because you read a storybook about it.

Ideas have power. That book influenced me greatly when I read it as a teenager, and really caused me to think more critically about the powers that be.

Free distribution would still bring the key concepts to a larger audience; lots of people use the Internet for email and social activities, but relatively few for forums, and I don't see 1984 referenced much in the news. It would certainly be more useful than distributing Bibles. The terms "big brother" and "thought police" are cliched. Not to mention, all the concepts that are "cliched" are not necessarily understood, and they are only so well known in name because Orwell popularized them.

Thanks for the condescending remarks- I am as aware as anyone of the state the world is in and I feel like having spent lots of time thinking about the concepts aids my understanding of it. By drawing parallels between the fictional society created by Orwell and the one I'm living in, I can grow to understand both better. After all, in real life I don't get to look into what makes peoples' minds tick as they practice doublethink, etc.
