The Concert "Batting Average"

I mentioned in another thread that I had thought to make this post and never got around to it; well, here it is.

For any number of reasons, I really can't bring myself to be much of a fan of any artist who , when you go see them live, you leave realizing that what made them good on the album was the studio rather than their own raw talent - this is a big part of my motivation for posing this question.

I've been to 14 TOOL concerts, and at every single one I left feeling like I'd been undercharged!  14/14, batting 1.00, must be pretty exceptional; I wouldn't expect every band to be like this.  A Perfect Circle was also 5/5, according to me anyway.

I'm a fan of Rufus Wainwright, and have seen him twice.  I'd say at this point he's batting .500.  Of course, the first concert had a whole orchestra and was part of the album tour - it was utterly terrific.  The second concert it was just he and a relative, so there was a lot less variety of sound, but also he had grown a scraggly beard and just wasn't really "into" it.  I enjoyed myself, but I felt like I'd been overcharged.  I guess that's one way of measuring success: did you leave feeling you'd gotten at least your money/time/efforts worth?

I've seen many concerts in my day, but so many of them were artists I've only seen once so I can't give a reasonable "batting average."  I've seen the Disco Biscuits enough times , though; off the top of my head I'd give them at least a .800 or so, but it's harder in their case because a) I was always really messed up when they finally got on stage and b) they were always at festivals with lots of other bands, so the ticket-price measuring-stick isn't a valid one.  I'd mention Les Miserables here, which I have seen enough to give an average, but that also does't work because of different casts and different conductors and so on, and besides - I'd rather this thread be about "bands"/"solo artists"/whatever - we can discuss theater elsewhere :smile:

Anyway, those are a couple of mine.  I'm curious to hear yours: it could help me avoid some crappy shows while helping me catch some great ones.

I think that any band, even an exceptional one, is bound to have good nights and bad nights.

Absolutely, and some of the TOOL concerts I went to were certainly better than others, but I would still put every one of them in the "tremendous success/tremendously worthwhile" category.  I really like Rufus Wainwright, and was able to see firsthand that he is able to pull off a stellar show with genuine talent, but he's human and a (not as much anymore) broke artist and I have no problem admitting that the other concert I went to was kinda crappy. 

I think that, if people actually end up replying, we might see some consistency in the "batting averages" between different people commenting on various bands.  I mean, people wouldn't have put their lives on hold to tour with the Dead if the show wasn't consistently good, right?  Some great artists might have a few more bad nights than others, which would be interesting to know.  Many artists might have more bad nights than good, too, which could be helpful to know when buying tickets in the future!
