Anyone here a psychologist or a psych major?

I'm a senior in high school. I have been interested in psychology for a few years. I like the side of psychology that is studying the mind and behavior and I think I might like to major in it. I just don't know if I would like the practical, real-world side of psychology. I think therapy would be very interesting and I think I would enjoy it, but I've heard that psych majors have the lowest starting salary of any degree. As much as I find it interesting, if I'm going to be poor I would rather major in something else and just study psych as a side thing or maybe go back to school once I have a reliable income or something.

Really, I'm just looking for psychologists/psych majors to tell me what it is like to be a psychologist and if they regret the decision due to lack of income.

I'm a freshman in college currently taking an introduction course and I love it so far learning about all sorts of behavioral theories that you can relate to as well as behavior at the cellular level in the brain. What I suggest is just taking introductory courses you think you might be interested in as a major and go from there. You don't have to decide your major for a while. Also you pretty much have to go to grad school for something whether it would be industrial psych, clinical, counselor, or researcher( there's probably more) to get a decent job.

You wont be poor with a psych degree.  You can get into social work pretty easily and make 30k a year.  You can get a masters in counseling or social work and start with a little more. 

Like most things in college, you should do it because you like it.  If you want to make more money a trade is probably a better thing to go for.

Poor was a bad choice of words. I've grown up with 2 parents who are both engineers and make 6 figures. I realize I wouldn't be POOR per say, but not the amount I was expecting. I realize that I won't make 6 figures right out of college in any profession but from my reading I've heard that most psychologists never make more than 65-75k ever. While that IS CERTAINLY good money, it just seems like there's a ceiling.

This is all just from reading, like I said, and making 6 figures isn't the point. I'm not looking into it for the money, but in the area where I want to live 30-50k really isn't much.

All I gotta say is that Experimental Psychology is a bitch.

If you can pass that course, you can do anything.

Hi, I'm majoring in psych at Uni in the UK.  I don't regret taking on this challenge and it definitely gives you transferable skills such as analytical thinking, independence, presentation skills boosting confidence and team working.  Psychologists not only work in the helping caring professions per se, you can find them working with organizations such as Microsoft helping to develop GUIs.  Taking a degree and then going on to teach - if this route is available in the US is a very good way of increasing your value.  But if it's the money you are solely after then you should definitely consider some options, the discipline more times than not requires a commitment and yes, if a person can get past experimental psych then you can go anywhere.

EDIT: it also depends on what you want to do with your degree when you graduate, clinical psych may pay well or you may choose to go on to do a Doctorate, I know some US states require that level to become a licensed psychologist, CA being one of them.  Once you start the academic journey you never really know where it will take you.  There's plenty of money if research psychology too.

I'm a psych major. I make ~12k a year (before taxes). I live in a state and in a way that makes this possible. And while this is not a job in the mental health field, mental health comes up. You can go anywhere and do anything and find people who are drawn to a good non-judgemental listener. I am extremely glad to have gone through the process. It culminated in a tremendous breakthrough in understanding on an individual level.

I graduated from UF in Psych and Family Youth Community Sciences. Honestly, Major does not really matter that much. Psychology is great for almost any field you go into. You can always get a masters or do the prerequisites for med, law, or pretty much anything if your worried. I was only organic chemistry 1 and 2 away from having all you need for medical school. It's a very interesting major and if given the right professors you can learn a lot! I'd say go for it if that's your passion. Only you set the limits on what you do with it.

I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Psychology in 1979.  Even with a heavy concentration on the scientific side and as light on the nonsense side as I could get away with, it was still an almost completely useless degree.  You might be able to parlay it into a crappy civil service job.  The chance that you will ever justify the cost of obtaining that degree, plus the loss of 4 years work experience, is virtually nil.

A little cynical, but right.  I have a literature major w/ a psych minor.  All liberal arts/sciences you HAVE to go through grad school for your Masters just to make it worth it.  Then, you'll probably want to go for your doctorate to actually make more than 30k a year...
Good luck, it's definitely a science I think everyone should take, but, as for a major, idk.  Do what you LOVE that's what college is for.
