Best Casing Mix for Spotting Aborts?
    #1346492 -

Verm/peat? Verm/coir? Oyster shell or sand added? My friend has a contam problem on his casing and after inspection has determined that it is most likely due to aborts that he didn't see. He is currently using medium ground verm, and nothing else.

He was thinking of using the 60 verm/40 coir + oyster shell his next case. He plans on mixing/grinding until the mixture is fine and patching before fruiting.

Any insights are appreciated.

you have to remove the aborts completely because theres no stopping mold from growing on decaying mushroom parts. you can raise the ph of your casing using oyster shells (not great at ph buffering), chalk, dolomite lime (recommended) , or hydrated lime (very powerful, easy to mess up the ph if too much is added). having a higher ph will prevent contams like cobweb or trich from growing on the casing layer but won't stop them from growing on aborts. i thought of patching after the harvest to cover up any aborts that were missed + pieces of mushroom stem that were accidentally left behind but i'm not sure how well that would work. if anyone has experience with recasing/patching after every flush, let me know.

Does casing with certain ingredients make spotting them easier?

I mean, when my friend dug out the green he noticed dozens of aborts that weren't much larger than the head of a pin. These guys weren't visable from the surface.

Perhaps the finer the casing material, the easier it is to detect these guys? A finer material would also prevent light from reaching further into the casing, creating a light shield of sorts that might prevent these sub-surface little guys from growing in the first place, yes?
