Entoloma madidum (ID Please)

Found alone, growing from soil between patches of running cedar, in mixed predominantly hardwood, forest.

Pileus:
4cm broad, convex with low umbo, smooth with what appear to be slight wrinkles, blue-gray with silvery shimmer.
Flesh is white and soft

Lamellae:
Adnexed, creamy with slight pinkish hue, close

Stipe:
4.75-5cm long, 1cm thick, white to creamy with purple hues, white at base, smooth, equal, solid

Smell:
Can't really put a name on it. Maybe spermatic and slightly sweet?

Spore Print: Pinkish Red

Thought this to be Entoloma madidum/bloxami.
Any suggestions are welcome.

Looks like a good match :thumbup: I'm not familiar with this species, so can't say for sure.

Largent lists that species only from California and Oregon. That doesn't mean it doesn't occur elsewhere - that's just where he lists it in his monograph.

Your photos from the field certainly resemble his.

Was the cap surface slimy or sticky? That seems to be a macroscopic feature that should be important for this species.

Beyond that, some spore photos would help a lot. Largent uses microscopic features for most everything.

Michael Kuo lists them from southeastern US (under E. bloxami), but I don't know which referrences he used for that.

Yeah. Largent says that the correct name is E. bloxami.

Another key macroscopic feature is that the stem often has a yellow base.

Because most its close relatives don't have it. So, when you find a collection of mushrooms in that section (Nolanidea) of the genus, if some of them have a yellow stem base then they are much more likely to be E. bloxami. The only other species in the section with a yellow stem base is E. ferruginans, which can be distinguished by having dark gray gills and a dark gray brown to almost black cap.

The primary feature he describes for the species is the bluish gray cap.

I've read that it is found in North Carolina, California and the Pacific Northwest. Kind of an odd listing of range if you ask me.

I don't recall it being slimy.
It may have had a slight stickiness to it, but I really can't remember so I don't want to say for sure.
(sorry)

I would love to be able to provide microscopy but I am very broke due to having no job and have no microscope. So I can't at the moment.

I didn't see any yellow at the base...
