Found some big blue shrooms - help with ID?

Hey everyone
Before I say anything I will remind people I am in New Zealand.
On a recent hunting expedition, we found some shrooms growin in a wooded area (but with grass around the trees, the trees were poplar-type) which was near a patch of P.Subaeruginosa (but i dont think that has much to do with it).
Anyway, they are REALLY blue, all over. When I saw em I thought wow, those are some fuckin blue shrooms, but are they magic?
Here is a description:
Appearance generally similar to pictures I've seen of cubes - but we don't get cubes here (or at least its never been documented)
Caps ranging from about 3cm (1.5in) across to about 6-7cm (2.5in) across.
Caps classic cubensis tan colour in centre, rapidly changing to blue around the outsides.
Gills an off white colour kinda whiteish-grey-tan.
Stems were thick ranging from 0.5cm (1/4in) to 2cm (3/4in) thick, and they were solid not hollow.
Spore print is a brown colour, infact almost exactly the colour of cinnamon.
These shrooms were blue before I picked them, and they haven't gone any more blue since them. They are almost dry now and have barely changed shape / size.
The stems and outside of the caps were blue even on the young shrooms. The gills had no blueing and did not bruise blue either.
At the moment it has been cold (with a couple of frosts) and a bit rainy.
We dug up some mycelium of these and they were growing in grass roots, wood chips and dirt, in clumps of grass around the base of the trees.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Anyone have pics of shrooms that sound similar to this so that I can compare?
I really want to know, cause if these are magic, they are some damn fine specimens.
By the way, the blue colour they went is kind of a hospital greeny-blue.

Great site but with the usual pictures from Stamet's book... If its a large mushroom, it could be Stroparia / Psilocybe Aeruginosa - funny that is has a similar name to your favourite mushroom - it is not known to be active.

You can go to http://www.erowid.org and read my book Magic Mushrooms of Australia and new Zealand It lists species from both the North and the SOuth Islands.
mj
And your blue mushroom is most likely Stropharia aeruginosa, a mushroom which is already blue. IT does not stain blue. mj

mj- Thanks, I am pretty sure it is the Stropharia aeruginosa. Do you have any info on this? Poisonus? Edible? Hallucinogenic? Also, do you have any extra pics from NZ that you could email me, ones that arent in your Au & NZ guide? Cause there is jack-all information on mushrooms here in NZ, so some extra pics would be helpful since I'm only confident at identifying 2 or 3 species here.
By the way dude, that bright blue shroom is a real mushroom, I have found those before as well as bright orange ones and bright red, basically every colour. Haven't found any green ones though. That would be cool.

When I read this I immediatly thought its an entoloma, (there are also other blue entolomas) then I went looking for entoloma pics and found this stamp. Psilocybes do not have spore print like that! You have some really weird mushrooms over there! If you check this site carefully you will find many mushrooms that can not be found anywhere else in the world.

The bluest shrooms I can think of are Entomola species. Check out Entoloma virescens from Japan.

Entoloma prints are pinkish.
However the tropical mushroom genus Heinemannomyces (with its one species in Peninsular Malaysia) produces a ravishingly deep cobalt blue sporeprint. There are several other tropical mushroom genera with odd sporeprint colours (bright red, orange etc.) and I'd love to find them all.

It is not poisonous. And, although Stamets in his Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World writes that "activity is suspected but unknown", I believe these species are inactive, at least here in the northern Europe. A couple of years ago I administred a sizeable amount of fresh specimens and felt no effects whatsoever.
