    #3560507 - 12/30/04 08:06 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

there are two kinds as you can see from the pics...
i'm pretty sure they're not helucinogenic but if any oof them are they're probably the brown ones rather then the white ones...

there was also a single weird one that i'm not sure is like the rest of them
well i hope someone can help identify any of them and enjoy the pics they came out rather good i think

Habitat (what does it grow on)
i'm in israel and these moshrooms grew on some kind of wood chips

b. Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
off white and i'm not sure... attached to what (i got pics so...)

c. Measurements of cap and stem.
the biggest was about a 3-4 inch cap and stem...

d. Characteristics of the stem (color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)
grey/brown solid and thick

e. Characteristics of the cap (color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
black top and grey/brown (i'm not sure about the rest... that's why i've got pics)

f. Spore print color (very important!)
off white/ maybe even pinkish?

g. Color that the mushroom bruises
does not really bruises... if anything it turned black and a little mushier
h. Scent of mushroom
mushroomie but really faint

thi one is the weird one i'm not sure is like the others

these are the one's i'm trying to identify
though i wouldn't mind if someone would identify all three

this is where they were growing

When we ask if the gills are attached, we are asking if they are attached to the stem. Cut one of them in half vertically and it will generally be obvious if the gills are attached to the stem or not. Note that mushrooms we refer to as free gilled also have stems that very easily separate from the cap.

For the spore print color, be sure you get a heavy deposit of spores. For identification purposes white paper should be used.

Did you pick the odd one and bring it home for identification? If so, have you done a spore print? It resembles the second species, and I wouldn't be surprised if it were actually the same. There are lots of mushrooms whose caps will turn like that as they age.

Assuming (<--- *big* assumption) that the spore print is pinkish, then your mushroom is probably a Nolanea or Entoloma. Identification to species in either genus is very difficult and requires a microscope. They should not be eaten.

Incidentally, when we refer to a pinkish spore print, it can be anything from a distinctly pinkish brown to a bright salmon color. A very pale pinkish color (almost white) actually falls into the category of white spore prints, and indicates a member of the genus Clitocybe (sometimes split off to form the genus Lepista).

The white mushroom with the decurrent gills closely resembles Clitocybe dealbata, a notorious poisonous mushroom containing high levels of muscarine. Although rarely fatal the symptoms are *very* unpleasant and usually result in an emergency room visit. Unlike almost all mushroom toxins, there is actually an antidote for muscarine. Unfortunately, many emergency room physicians overdose the antidote (atropine), and make the victim sick in a different way.

There are several very similar mushrooms, but they are difficult to distinguish without a microscope (and not that easy with one). None of them are worth eating for any reason.

Happy mushrooming!

The little brown ones which drop pinkish spores are some species of Pluteus, close to P. longistriatus. They are not active and of unknown edibility/toxicity. There are several species of Pluteus which are active; they can be distinguished from multitude of other little brown Pluteus species by a blue bruising reaction.

The little white one with decurrent gills resembles Clitocybe. It should not be eaten.

Nice photos

Yeah, OK, Pluteus is pretty likely. I'm not sure why I almost never seem to think of Pluteus right away when finding pink spored mushrooms.

Happy mushrooming!

Listen to Toxicman, he's been at this a lot longer than I have.
Nolanea and Entoloma are possibilities. The above mushrooms appear to have free gills and they look very much like Pluteus which I have found growing from rotting logs. These however were growing from the ground which does suggest a terrestrial species of Nolanea or Entoloma. They could however be growing from buried wood, which would be consistent with Pluteus. Isn't this fun!

Don't eat them, OK.

well... when i wrote the first post i was just starting to print the shroom (about 20 minuts) and NOW i can say its defently NOT pinkiesh  sorry...
it IS a kind of brown rusty color though...
and i think i can also say that the gills are indeed "free" if that halps

i did not bring the "weird" one back... i was pretty sure it was the same kind my self so...

also if i haven't already mentioned the whole garden is covered in wood chips (i have no idea what kind of wood though)

thanks for taking the time to help
