Maine Teachers Warned!

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20030228/ap_on_re_us/teachers_iraq_2 Yup, another attack against free speech. Maine teachers are allowed to promote bloodshed, but censured for speaking against war: "Any suggestion that their parents (National Guard) are doing something wrong is extremely unfortunate and could have a harmful effect, particularly on young children," Senator Collins said. I see. Massive violence has no adverse affect on children, only one-one violence. In a nation that models itself after Christ, war is good.

teachers are hired to teach, not promote their beliefs either way. That's why we have a lot of slow people from public schools.
after work they are more than welcomed to express whatever they feel

That article was pretty skimpy on the facts. This is all it had to say about the Department of Education's position on the matter:
In Maine, Department of Education Commissioner Duke Albanese sent a memo to superintendents and principals, writing that it had been brought to his attention some school personnel had been "less than sensitive to children of military families regarding our continued strained relations with Iraq."
He said discussion should allow for questions and differences of opinion, but "be grounded in civil discourse and mutual respect."
Doesn't sound to me like teachers are being restricted in any way; they are merely being asked to be a bit more sensitive. I'd say that's pretty good advice.

Judging by the way you stated that sentence I'll assume you went to public school as well...

Why do they have to folow up their greasy rules with a lie to justify it?
I think a child better get used to the reality of differing opinions early on. If he's to be a critical thinker that is...
That article didn't mention if any of the parent/soldiers also disagree with this war...and therefore 'confuse' the children of those disagreers with pro war talk, or were their rights of disagreement striped long ago....probably.
It's been a bad day. I've seen a lot of articles about civil rights abuses in the USA today.
Now they want you to not express yourself 'for the children's sake'. Unless you agree with the government, then re-inforcing the sense of rightness is encouraged. I'm going to go puke now.

do you actually condone teachers who tell kids that their parents are evil, bad, etc.?
Quote:

it's not the teachers job to do this (is this making any sense?). I'm surprised that a board full of libbies would actually condone the harrassment of kids because their students families do something that they don't believe in. That's sad..

That is up to the parents of the child. This is common knowledge.

while you're there puke for the teachers spewing their beliefs when they're NOT teaching those kids.

Teachers don't impart morals?
Teacher: "Johnny, don't hit Billy."
Student: "Why not? He took my pencil."
Teacher: "That is no excuse for violence. We are not supposed to hurt one another."
Student: "How come Sargeant Andrews gets to carry an M-16 to go to war to kill people?"
Teacher: "That is different. He is killing people for oil, not a pencil."
Student: "Oh, so if Billy took a quart of oil from my Dad's garage, then I could hurt him?"
Teacher: "Certainly not young man."
Student: "I don't understand."
Teacher: "Open your math book to page 102..."

Agreed. There are a dozen articles on the "incident". I did not post the most elaborate one, just the last one that I looked at. Try a search for the full info.

I think the teachers need to get used to the idea that if they can't do their job correctly, they'll be working down at the local factory. ...now if we could just get this kind of protection for children of pot smokers, and single parents who sleep with their girl/boyfreinds.

Some one from Maine should contact this senator and ask if that also applies to children who are told to turn their parents in for drug use.

I think a good portion of the teaches are overqualified. They complain about making less than most people with a 4 year degree, but I don't understand why you need a college degree to teach anything under 6th grade.
They should lower the educational requirements for teaching 6th grade and under to just a high school diploma.
Am I nuts?

I think we should just let children stay home and watch T.V. all day. They will learn everything they need to know that way.

i think that's a great idea...the staying home part that is. There's no wonder why home schooled kids are better educated and cost the parents less in the long run. This is where morals should be taught.
unless i'm wrong, do you guys actually want teachers to teach your kids what their opinion of the world is?
I know i don't.
