Was there at Hulaween for both nights, drove all the way from Chicago to Hampton to be there. It was awesome. 2nd set of the 2nd night was probably the worst set though, just a bunch of cover music.

Either
1) you don't like SCI because their sets were almost perfect
2) the doses threw everything off for you [I for one can't listen to music on strong acid... too much sound distortion]

I was up front center almost the entire time for both nights. Bunch of people grooving, having fun, smiling, and getting along. There was 1 shirtless asshole who came jumping through trying to start a moshpit, but 3 guys grabbed on to him because he kept knocking into their girls and when he couldn't jump around anymore he left.

There's always going to be those kind of people, nothing you can do about it. Maybe is the drugs, maybe its just shitty people with overinflated egos. I met a lot of beautiful people though.

Undercover cops in the lot were out of control.

I can't figure out for the life of me why (with the exception of Further) any of these bands are mentioned with the Grateful Dead. I think the problem (like the OP said) with most of these bands is that they're only partly about music, and if you go expecting mind blowing music, you will always be let down. That's not even what these bands are about. If you go expected awesome eye candy, a fun time, and some mediocre "psychedelic" jamming, that's exactly what you'll get.

I just have to quote this to point out how retarded it is. Do you play any instruments? Do you know anything about music? Phish is composed of four of the best musicians I've ever heard, and every single night they push themselves and improvise new content.  Their jams are trippy as hell and the know how to take you places. I don't think these scenes are beat at all, in fact I expect a renaissance of the live music scene over the next couple of years.

It sounds cool to say "yeah the Dead are good, everybody else sucks," but the fact is Phish is every bit as musically talented as the Grateful Dead were, probably more so, and this is coming from somebody who loves the Dead.  Sure they had some of that magic that can't be reproduced, but Phish has their own magic, so does STS9 on nights when they play hard, and idk about those other bands.

Never been to a Furthur show, but they still sound pretty good. I'm checking them out NYE and expect to have a blast!

Yeah, I've been playing music nonstop since 5th grade. I play guitar, baritone, trombone, trumpet, piano and tuba :shrug:

I've tried giving Phish plenty of chances, but I have yet to hear anything at all special from them. Maybe I'm listening to the wrong stuff. My brother didn't like them until he saw them live, and now he's a huge fan. That could be part of it too.

I'm not at all trying to sound cool saying that the Grateful Dead are in their own league compared to all those other bands, it's my honest opinion. I didn't include Further because it's members of the dead, so it make sense that they're grouped with the dead.

Everyone in that band can for sure play their instruments, but their music doesn't do anything at all for me.

Well I sort of lumped your comment in with Antieverything's also so maybe I was being unfair.  I just don't understand how anybody couldn't be blown away by how good Phish is.  If you've never seen em live that could very well change your opinion, although I liked em before seeing them live.

To be honest, I don't really see how anyone with knowledge of music can fail to recognize the depth and complexity of Phish's music, regardless of how much you like it. :shrug:

Exactly, you might not like their style or whatever, but how could you not be impressed by people that good? To this day there is nobody that can really do what Phish does imo.

I don't think you can argue that Phish's music is lacking either of those things. What they are lacking for me is the intangible "it" factor that I hear in the Grateful Dead's music but not in Phish's (or any other band discussed in this thread) music.

I hear ya on that, but for me Phish has that as well, but just in a different form.  It's more...idk..."dirty" than the dead.  The grateful dead's vibe is almost mystical at times, but Phish is just a band there to give the people what they want: sick ass jams and songs.  But if they don't connect I guess that's not your fault, I would just say that I think if you open up to Phish a little bit you will be doing yourself a favor.

Claypool on set, interesting.  Ya Down With Disease is an obvious song but it's a good first Phish song imo.

that hasn't exactly been proven in this thread

although it all started with 1 guy attacking all headline jambands
followed by someone defending further and the dead
then someone defending phish because the previous defense for further/dead upset them
then it turned into phish vs grateful dead/further
then it went to a phish video because someone said they haven't seen them live
then a claypool video (dont really know why, people who like phish like primus??)
then a claypool/anastasio video

which really has nothing to do with the original post.
