I can't figure out for the life of me why (with the exception of Further) any of these bands are mentioned with the Grateful Dead. I think the problem (like the OP said) with most of these bands is that they're only partly about music, and if you go expecting mind blowing music, you will always be let down. That's not even what these bands are about. If you go expected awesome eye candy, a fun time, and some mediocre "psychedelic" jamming, that's exactly what you'll get.

I think you expected too much from them OP.

Yeah, I've been playing music nonstop since 5th grade. I play guitar, baritone, trombone, trumpet, piano and tuba

I've tried giving Phish plenty of chances, but I have yet to hear anything at all special from them. Maybe I'm listening to the wrong stuff. My brother didn't like them until he saw them live, and now he's a huge fan. That could be part of it too.

I'm not at all trying to sound cool saying that the Grateful Dead are in their own league compared to all those other bands, it's my honest opinion. I didn't include Further because it's members of the dead, so it make sense that they're grouped with the dead.

Everyone in that band can for sure play their instruments, but their music doesn't do anything at all for me.

I hear ya on that, but for me Phish has that as well, but just in a different form.  It's more...idk..."dirty" than the dead.  The grateful dead's vibe is almost mystical at times, but Phish is just a band there to give the people what they want: sick ass jams and songs.  But if they don't connect I guess that's not your fault, I would just say that I think if you open up to Phish a little bit you will be doing yourself a favor.
