string cheese incident
    #13415021 -

I don't know if any of you guys listen to string cheese, but after watching this video from rothbury 2009,

and hearing so much about their reputation in the "jam" scene, I was really excited for their HULAween show in hampton last night. Ive seen the Emmitt Nershi Band and it was a great show, and i've seen EOTO but its not my style.

so we got to our hotel, me and my girlfriend split the last 4 tabs of some reealy good acid I got over the summer, and we head into the show with our friends.

I wasn't really feeling it first set, there were moments that sounded good but it wasn't flowing. I chalked this up to weirdness from the acid coming on, smoked a joint at the set break and went back in with an optimistic mindset. The second set was painful, we tried a few different places on the floor, but it wasn't right so we tried the seats, hoping that it was our surroundings and not the band that was off. we went outside, smoked, regrouped and went back in, the jams were not tight, the band was not playing together or communicating musically. The epic crescendos felt forced, they weren't built up right and the transitions were unnatural and energy killing.

We found our friends after the second set, it was a 3 set show, but none of them seemed to have been watching the same show, they were all enjoying themselves and the music. we went back in to try and figure out if we were crazy or they were stupid, we were sitting in some of the upper seats, people watching, and I see this commotion on the floor. At first I thought I was imagining it, but I wasn't, an allout fucking brawl broke out on the floor. Minimum 6 people involved, fists flying, dreads swinging, and shirts off. Not a disagreement or a shoving match this was a motherfucking brawl. It lasted for at least 30 seconds, which in fight time is not that short. first punches were thrown, everyone in the immediate vicinity backs off, circles up, and more people jump in more punches, shirts ripped off at least on guy went down and got stomped, and then they kinda dispersed into the crowd. It took the cops about a minute to swarm the area but its a fucking Halloween show, everyone's in costume, all you gotta do is pay some kid 20 bucks to swap masks and the cops will never find you.

What really got me is that no else in the place seemed to notice, it wasn't a loud fight and with the commotion of set break i'm sure almost no one saw it, me and my girl were the only people we were with who saw it. But the people around it on the floor sure as hell saw it, and no one tried to stop it, no one seemed to even really care. Everyone just went about business as usual like nothing had happened. I never thought id see a fight like this at a "jam show", maybe in the lot, but not on the floor in the venue.

We tried to enjoy ourselves during the 3rd set, but it was just painful, it sounded bad and was really fucking loud. we went outside but it was too cold so we went back in but the music was too bad to listen too. I would have left if id had anywhere to go, our hotel was 3 miles away and our friends who drove were having a good time. we ended up spending most of the 3rd set sitting in the no mans land between the entrance to the seats, and the outdoor area. It wasn't too cold or too loud, so we just waited out the show.

Maybe I'm missing something, maybe I just don't "get it", but i think I do. It wasn't a concert, it was a show. ohhh it sounds like aliens and future, trippy lights with crazy projections, fucking sweet but I paid to see music. There were moments where it sounded good I could hear what the music could be, maybe what it used to be? but those moments were fleeting and quickly interrupted by awkward transitions. This was my first cheese show, I don't listen to them often I really don't know what im talking about, but after the show last night I will never pay to see a String Cheese incident again. Im pissed off about the money, with a $50 ticket + hotel, gas, food it was an expensive trip, but im way angrier that I wasted the last of my good LSD on this. The band failed to build the energy of a psychedelic jam, the music didn't flow. Can someone tell me if cheese has always sounded like this? am I just crazy? have they gone downhill lately? I felt like Jason and Travis were trying to do their eoto thing and weren't interested in playing WITH their bandmates, but i don't know.

was anyone else there? anyone see the fight? I've yet to talk to someone else who even knew it happened and I was walking around talking to people all night. I feel like im crazy, my friends have all been talking about the show like it was the best shit since sliced bread. I just don't know whether to trust myself or blame it on a weird trip.

from what I saw before, during, and after the show the Cheese crowd is dirty. A bunch of Sketchy, skeezy, stinkin' wooks, and i've been to my fair share of shows, I know about the sketchyness that comes along with the scene.

There ain't no love in String Cheese. If your looking for good music, with good people, don't go to the cheese show.

looking for good music, with good people?

definately don't go to a:

phish, furthur, cheese, sts9, eoto, umphrey's, moe's etc etc etc

have you not realized that the dead-beat "hippie" bullshit is over?
that scene and by scene i mean anyone who is a hippie is completely BEAT

go on dead lot lately and see a lot of crack heads, drug dealers and people that are ALWAYS down to start fights....it's disgusting

the grateful dead are easily one of the best bands of all time, im not even going to clump them with the rest of the shitty jam band scene cuz IMO they are in a league all of their own. but the scene is BEAT and i mean fuckin beat

you couldn't pay me to go to another hippie show. period

Every band has their off nights   I still like String Cheese

I have to disagree with this.  Phish still puts on great shows and the crowds are awesome, even if lots of them are posers like me who only recently got into their music.  STS9 shows are pretty fun too, IME.

I can't figure out for the life of me why (with the exception of Further) any of these bands are mentioned with the Grateful Dead. I think the problem (like the OP said) with most of these bands is that they're only partly about music, and if you go expecting mind blowing music, you will always be let down. That's not even what these bands are about. If you go expected awesome eye candy, a fun time, and some mediocre "psychedelic" jamming, that's exactly what you'll get.

I think you expected too much from them OP.

your right dude, the scene is beat, but real hippies aren't gone by anymeans. Theres alot of people out there who perpetuate the hippie image but are really just drug addicts, scheming what they can.

That being said I think that furthur has still got some magic. yes there are a bunch of crackheads in the lot but they are outnumbered by the deadheads, who are there for the music. And the music is good, John is the man, i loved him with dso and he fits great with furthur. with Jeff on the keys, joe russo on the drums, and some awesome backup vocals furthur is smokin hot.

give this show a listen

Phil might be old but hes still dropping bombs, and when bobby isn't having an off night the band is tight. I completely understand why you wouldn't want to deal with all the fake hippie bullshit, but if you love the grateful dead I highly recommend giving furthur a chance.

i was on furthur tour this summer, believe me, i got my (ph)fill....

when i see those shows they almost make me cry

the ambience in the crowd, in the air.....just everything....
to me it just screams "ITS OVER"
yet they are still just chasing the dragon...:syringe:

its almost really sad...
with bobby's refrain of "never fade away dream"
i suddenly become aware of how faded away the dream has actually become

Have you ever been to a Phish show?  They are incredibly musically talented, and were even more so in their prime in the '90s.  I'm a huge Dead fan and don't want to compare the two directly, but you can't knowledgeably dismiss Phish as just another jam band.

I hear that. I enjoy the Grateful Dead. But when I listen to their music, it's just pregnant with nostalgia. I find is sad how people still want to cling to something that is gone and will never come back. It's one thing if you were actually there when Jerry was still alive, but there are people like this who have only gotten into them in recent years.

It's like "hey, remember all those good time those OTHER people had..."

That said, there are still some really amazing bands out there, especially funk and jazz. Jam music does kind of suck, but the parties are fun as hell!

As for SCI. My friends saw them their first time at Rothbury a few years ago and have been cheeseheads ever since. They fucking rave about the band and how awesome and positive their music is. I've never seen a show, but the recorded performances I've heard didn't really catch my ear. But I've heard they put on quite a spectacle.

Wow I go to Phish shows and have a blast, I don't understand your mentality on this. Same with EOTO and STS9. I find cool like minded people there, maybe you've had bad experiences that you're projecting onto the whole scene?

BS, there are tons of good people that go see those bands.  There are a decent amount of scumbags, but the good people outnumber the assholes.  Also, the west coast scene and the east coast scene are different.  West Coast has way more homeless wooks mooching off the scene than the East.  You go to see a good band with a smaller crowd, or a small festival its a lot tighter and there aren't really any scumbags there starting shit or stealing.  I like meeting likeminded people with similar musical tastes, and I'm a very good judge of character so I almost never have an issue with the scumbags.

SCI rocked Rothbury! Do you remember the giant red beach ball rolling around the crowd?  Or was that Yonder's set?

I also saw The Dead, Umphrey's, Chromeo, Sound Tribe there and I enjoyed all of their sets. Shpongle threw down too.

I don't mean to offend or anything, but maybe you just weren't feeling it? It's happened to me many times that I've disliked a show while tripping, probably due to my own mindset. That, and every band has their moments - I'd say give 'em another shot, preferably outdoors at a festival.
