Nietzsche was a spiritualist
    #13344719 -

This claim was made in the pub. Can this be substantiated at all?

Depends entirely on what you mean by spiritualist.

If you think spiritualism means exploration of one's depths, he was spiritual as fuck.
If you think spiritualism means believing in ghosts and souls, he wasn't.

By spiritual I mean that non-material things exist.

I recognize the other usage and would agree that yes he was. But i don't think that what we agree he was is considered spiritual

Any commonly used definition of "spiritual" involves belief in a non-material reality. There is no validity to the claim that Nietzsche believed anything of the sort- in fact, he considered people that did "despisers of the body."

I suppose he would put more emphasis and point out that, even if the ideal realm or soul plane was real, it would be pretty '2nd string' to the primacy of the corporeal world we find ourselves in... insofar as life as we know it is more potentially meaningful than what we posit in the depths of our detective playing or something, finitude is our fate, a soul doesn't matter, though he did think about eternal-recurrence... anyyyway... the ballyhoo surrounding spirituality is comedic to him i guess, though it is true he was interested in Dionysian rapture experiences and ecstasy, but it fits into his sort of 'pinnacle of Greek culture' approach to life (or something, lol) which celebrates Apollonian ideals with Dionysian chaotic ideals - something he more-or-less held for his entire life I would say...

The point I'm trying to stress is that "was Nietzsche a spiritualist" is really a meaningless question.
"Spirituality" is one of the most broadly defined terms in the English language, and many of its various definitions are contradictory.
You can confirm beyond any doubt that Nietzsche was not a spiritualist in the supernatural sense, and it will have no effect on the people who call him a spiritualist for other reasons.

Usually I'm a stickler for "come on everybody let's get our definitions straight," but you gotta pick your battles.
"Spirituality" is a word that we rigorous definers are just going to have to chalk up as a loss.
It's simply gotten too far afield from anything like a centralized idea that a definitive meaning can be tied down to.
It can mean almost anything, to anyone.

And you know what? Maybe that's a good thing.
Maybe we need a few words that are "up for grabs," that an individual or a small group can do whatever they want with.
Especially in the realms of subjective exploration and personal development, where individual differences by their very nature necessitate vocabularies made up along the way.
So, if people won't agree with my definition of spirituality, or yours, or anyone else's ... fine by me.
(Just so long they don't fuck with physics and evolutionary biology.)

"Spirituality" is a term which almost everyone recognizes as having something to do with deep personal development.
The problem is that everyone wants to develop in a different direction, and everyone has a different worldview in which to attempt this.

I guess what I'm really saying is, with the word "spiritual," we should pay attention to the intent more than the content.
Because everybody's content for the word (their personal definition) is different, and you've got about as good a chance of guessing exactly what another person means by it as you have of winning the lottery.
