PHOTOS ADDED - bluing photliota/armilaria/scaly gym - in the forest
    #13309223 -

sorry for the crappy post but i am posting from my phone in the forest and it is not one of those spiffy iphones.
i found some beautiful yellow mushrooms growing from a tree, they have scales on top. i have no books with me to refer to names. the lower caps had orange/brown prints on them. i am trying to get a better print in my backpack using paper & a box.

the basal myc was really hard to get to but doesnt seem to show much bruising. there were no pins-those usually show the bruising best. they were growing from a live, standing tree from a hole. i think a birch tree. just typo'd that at first to say bitch tree.

anyway, the caps have all sorts of blue bruising mess going on from where there had been a couple beetles. i dislike beetles but its cool that they made it bruise. will beetles make nonbruising mushrooms look like they are bruising?

are there any bruising gymnopilus with scaly caps? ive seen photos of nonbruising scaly ones but this seems weird. maybe a pholiota? are there photliota thay bruise blue? i'd think maybe armillaria but the spores are definitely not white.

real photos when i am back at home. i wish i brought a sweater. it is getting COLD here. where are my oystersssssssss??

ps. i will edit this when i get home so it doesnt look like it was written by a 12 year old.
speaking of 12 year olds, the lack of caps here forces me to include this (not at all serious) question: will these shroomies make me trip (non-existant, seeing as i'm female) ballz?!

pps. popping those litte pink balls of latex is fun. i think i read in a field guide that the common name is wolf's milk? what is the proper name?

There are scaly gyms that could bruise but the tree is alive? that makes it more unlikely but still possible

the pink balls are Lycogala epidendrum

Beaten to the pink balls.

Very hard to ID the other thing without seeing pics or info on gill attachment, ring zone and so on.  If it's very blue bluing on orange that sounds like it must be a Gym but if you're not sure what you're seeing... clearly you are right to rule out Armillaria.

gills ar e mostly free, just attached at the top. i dont think i see a ring zone but they are all mature. photos later. reagardless of genus, theyre some damn pretty mushrooms! thanks on the pink balls id! :sun:

I've seen Big Laughing Gyms as well as other clustering mushrooms growing from live maple trees that have multiple trunks. If the tree is really old and one of the trunks is starting to die mushrooms can easily grow from that section, otherwise i find clustered mushrooms growing from the point on the tree where all the trunks converge, even if it appears healthy.

They were growing from a funky birch tree that was kind of two trunks growing together. I have bad eyes but I didn't see the trunks become distinctly separate when I looked up.

Anyway, here are the photos. If you zoom in you can see the spore color on some of the caps from the higher up caps. The missing pieces were cut out by me because of a couple little beetles inside that I did not want in my basket. The blue is mostly where the beetles has been. I tried pressing on the caps and stems to see if they would blue but the mushrooms seemed a bit too dry for that.

Can beetles on their own cause a non-bruising mushroom to look as though it has bruised?

That's my guess as well but I can't find a species of Pholiota that turns blue. Any ideas? The closest photo I'm seeing is P. limonella but the scales didn't gelatinize and it doesn't say anything about the blue crap.

it's not actually bluing, tear open the cap where it is appearing to blu and it will be hollow where the bugs ate it.

Yeah, I had figured it was something to do with the beetles because the blue was only where the beetles had been. What about beetles would make the colors change?

I'd stuck a piece of white paper in with the mushrooms in a box. There's something that looks like a crappy print on it. The color is brownish pink. I'll set up a more proper spore print in a bit.

I really need to get a microscope. I'm far too curious to just settle on the genus so often!

Blueing mushrooms such as Psilocybes and Boletes will often show blueing where there is physical damage, including predation by insects, and sometimes merely from one mushroom growing against another.

If i didn't have such a strong impression that those where Pholiota, i would have suspected Gymnopilus.

on the other hand, that blue looks extremely vibrant; almost ink-like. It's definitely odd. I can't think how insects could do that to a non-bluing mushroom.

Yeah, it's really weird. I would try tasting them to check but sometimes I'll taste a mushroom that is absolutely a Gymnopilus, green patches and all, and taste no bitterness and then another day I'll taste one and want to vomit from how gross it is, so I don't feel like my sense of taste is all too reliable.

I'll go play around with mutilating one of them and see if there are any more color changes.

I don't usually care about activity (especially with nasty bitter Gyms!) but it would be pretty cool if these were somehow active Gyms or at least blue-staining Pholiotas. With those warts combined with blue bruising I could probably get take some lovely artsy photos.

the bugs dont actually turn the damaged part of the shroom blue, it's because of the transparency of the thin buggy eaten flesh and lighting that make it appear to be blue.
thats what i got to say about that damnit!

Is it at all possible that they are Gymnopilus fulvosquamulosus?

I think the blue was from the skin being so thin from the bugs and then the gill tissue underneath being black from bugs/rot. I wasn't able to get any other parts of the caps to turn blue like that and the print was nowhere near orange enough for me to still think Gymnopilus.

Yellow skin, made translucent from the bugs. Then the gills and flesh underneath is dark because of beetles getting in there. Black + yellowish overlay + dusk lighting maybe = blue?

but yellow + black does not = blue.

i certainly seem to see blue, in two separate images, though i have not seen the mushrooms in person.

The spore prints are brownish/rusty brown. They don't have that bright orange hue that Gymnopilus get. I am very much thinking these are some kind of Pholiota that just decided to get some blue spots. I didn't save any of the beetles but perhaps there is something strange about the beetle?

My stack of Spores That Need Microscopying keeps growing...If this financial aid thing goes through maybe I'll see about acquiring a used one.

Canid, I'll pm you in a few minutes. Damn slow phone!
