Re: Did video games make our generation obsessed with looped glitchy beats a la dubstep? [Re: AntiEverything]
    #13300214 -

If you're asking, do I (or anyone) as a listener like electronic/dubstep music because I grew up with video games my answer is still no. I like that music because I grew up in an era of emerging electronic music. It's always been there. Like I said, they share somewhat similar timelines. And my point about VG compositions is that they were never meant be electronic songs, that's just a medium they were forced into. I think electronic music as a genre evolved separately on its own accord. Do you see what I'm saying?

I'm not too familiar with video game music, but how were they not meant to be electronic music?

I mean it's not like the composers were surprised when they found out what it was going to be made with/on, so they knew. I thought the idea was to make suitable and good music with the tools they had. The tools were electronic. Unless they were composing pieces and then making arrangements for video games.

Well to be fair I think that's too general of a statement for me to make. For something like say Tetris you don't really expect much besides repetitive background noise. In Mario there's more of an actual soundtrack. Most of these songs were probably written on piano and then rewritten as MIDI tracks.

Anyways, I think I actually answered the OPs question in my previous post. Am I still offbase here?

I find that hard to believe considering Koji Kondo is a pianist.

i think its fun to listen to and try to pick up on all the different sounds used in this type of music. it's like there's so many sounds. it's really not about melody with this type of music but the vast range of unique sounds and that kinda thang gives me a stiffy

i like all music though

That's the way to go, I like raves/festivals where there is a more broad offer of music (and really the electronic spectrum goes far)

i would say no.

House came from Disco, DnB came from regge and hip hop, ect.

its all a natural progression.  I remember reading A letter from a composer in the late 1800's and he was like
"fuck, i wish i lived in the future because i bet they'll have electronic instruments that can do so much more than what we can do now".

Electronic music is popular because it sounds good, because you have much more control and can do things humans haven't been able to do.

If video game music influenced anything we'd all be listening to 8bit music.  But we're not all dueche's.

I think I've yearned to listen to dark robot music since I was born.  I was just waiting for it to be made.

Yeah that's kind of what I was trying to get at, it's a progression of things. Like I said, I think it evolved on it's own accord and people liked it and the popularity grew. It's just coincidental that a lot of us grew up with video games around the same time.

i think this might  be the group that first got me interested in the dubstepy sound

they're particularly heavy and i'm interested to hear what heavy metal fans think of this type of music

others may not be able to see the potentiality in this kind of music but i feel it expands horizons on like a futuristic level. i've always been a fan of orchestral music. deep, voluminous music with lots and lots of different instruments/sounds that put you in an entirely different world. and this dark atonal quality i'm attracted to i think because i'm a fan of david lynch and steve reich. i seriously get like synesthesia when different elements of sound/music are combined in a certain way and its :awecid:

i'm also all for melodic stuff too. nobue uematsu was my greatest influence w/ piano playing

I think video games and the like had alot to do with our love for electronic, idk about dubstep, most video game music esp the earlier shit was super fast, like that oldschool 8bit goodness, none of that is anything near dubstep. but techno and electro sure I can see that connection defintely
