Lime & Gypsum
    #13288039 -

I just bought some cuz ive been having a trich outbreak. the problem is i dont really know how to use it. Im gonna use some HP/Straw bulk substrate, any ideas on the ratios of gypsum, hydraded lime, & spent coffee grounds i should use. Id really apreciate any help. I was looking  throgh the forums and couldnt find a post with gypsum, hydraded lime, & spent coffee grounds in HP/Straw substrates.

Lime is useless unless you plan on buffering some casing mix, We use lime to buffer casing mixes to around a Ph of 8, to help inhibit the growth of mold. Myc and mold both love acidic subs, so if you were to say buffer your bulk sub you would be slowing down the growth of the myc as well. since cubes dont need a casing layer, there is is no need for lime.

Now Gypsum, which is Calcium and Sulfur, aids in the development of the mushrooms fruit bodies. Add 5% gypsum to all bulk subs and even a pinch per jar of grain when soaking. If your making cakes add 1 tablespoon of gypsum for 5 cakes worth of sub

hydraded lime is mostlty used for casing for its high acidic so it cant colonize keeping whats underneath live and well but thats for growing with bulk  trich is very sticky and hard to get rid of  Shea25 explains it better

ive heard soaking straw in lime watter can help protect it against contams. would it still work if i soak and pasturize the straw apart from the hpoo substrate and then mix it with the substrate? I was planning on using a verm/lime casing or a peat/verm. I know most peat has a high ph, so i wouldnt need to add any lime. about the trich, HELP PLEASE!!! any links or tips. Id really apreciate it. Thanx.

See the straw pasteurization video and text for a demonstration of using lime and hot water pasteurization together.

Not so.  Peatmoss has a very low pH, thus it's limed to raise the pH to neutral or above.

A properly pasteurized casing mix has little chance of growing molds before the mushroom mycelium takes over.  However, P cubensis requires no casing layer, so if that's what you're growing, you'll be better off to use your straw/manure uncased.

Thanx for the correction RR :bow2: Not that im gonna actually grow P. Cubensis:grin:, but about using the substrate uncased, if i add gypsum, will it increase the chances of contams? and what about the spent coffee?
