Hey guys, well my qt jars are well past colonized and I need to spawn them. I was curious if coir/coffee/hydrated lime/gypsum is a good bulk substrate, and if so what are the percentages per volume? Also will I need to sterilize/pasteurize this?

I use
1 1/2 bricks coir (1 gallon water per brick) 3-5 cups coffee (spent grounds) 1-2 cups calcium carbonate - Calci-Sand (from pet store)
Before I was bring water to 180 then dumping in cooler with all substrate.
Now I just pasteurize in the monotub I'm going go use (less mess)
I love Coir/Coffee I will never look back!!! Everyone always comments on how strong they are (best they have ever had, is what I hear the most often. This coming from multispore.
One batch I decided not to case and they never pinned on top just side pinning. The first flush was 5oz cracker dry. 2nd was 5oz cracker dry. 3rd was like 2.5oz. Its still pops up monsters many many flushes later (just a couple every so often) Going to have to dump it for room soon though.
Took forever to pin. They were the biggest mushrooms I have ever seen. This is also were my thread about the 16gram dry monster came from.
With a casing they pin consistently faster but smaller mushes.
Where I am going with this is I think you will grow to love Coir/Coffee.

This works. You can play around with the coir to coffee ratio, though. - 60% coir by volume. - 30% coffee by volume. - 10% gypsum by volume. You could scratch lime for the bulk, but maybe 5% for your casing. Pasteurize it. Do it.
Yeah, I agree with frock. Coir rocks.

I think I'm going to go with coir/coffee when I make my move to bulk substrates, but most of the tek guides here deal with hpoo/straw. Does anyone know of a good, very detailed (every step, if possible) guide for coir/coffee substrates?

frock - you've made up my mind, hopefully I have those kind of turnouts dry. What size mono tubs where you using? I have some HUGE rubber maids or something that I was using for the poor mans pod, and they worked great. I am going to convert them to mono tubs. I could only imagine seeing the pin set on the bottom of those huge bins haha.
thedefone - I am certainly no math wizz, but your numbers, and his look to be around the same volume wise, am I wrong? And rest assured it will get pasteurized .
BlargIAmDead - I have searched, maybe not the right quotes but he is right, there really isn't much pertaining to anything else except, poo/straw with a few exceptions.
Well, I guess that sums up the bulk, now how about a casing layer guys? I know you've got some nifty mixes for those, or everyone riding the 50/50 train?

Use gypsum instead of calcium carbonate.
Gypsum is a good pH buffer and nutrient supplement. Calcium Carbonate is a slow pH corrector.

I'm curious, does the coffee make for a speedy trip? And does it change the taste of the little guys? And does it matter which kind of coffee you use? I personally like chock full of nuts

Yeah, I just use the whole percent by volume method, because its easy to convert depending on how much you need. I suck at math. Hope your PMP->Monotub conversion goes well. I'll be doing the same thing with the 50 gallon tub I have leftover soon, as well. 50/50 for a casing works pretty good, and is pretty universal. When to apply it, and how long after that to induce fruiting, is another story.
