Calvatia fragilis / Calvatia cyathiformis? Edible puffball?
    #13282968 -

I've been curious to try some edible puffballs and found these in one of the Agaricus campestris fields. They had a really nice firmness to them and didn't explode into a powdery mess so I took a few home. They seem similar to Calvatia fragilis but I am reading that C. fragilis and C. cyathiformis might be the same species. Is that what I've found? If it is, are these the right age for eating?

Habitat: Scattered solitary or in groups of 2 or 3 on a slightly sloping grassy field. Very sunny area, it had rained heavily the past few days. Late September, NJ.

Cap: I misplaced my ruler but you can see about how big they are in the photos. I have pretty average sized hands. The colors are shades of brown except for one that has some dark purplish coloring to it. The texture is slightly rough. Mostly round with no "stem" at the base. One was slightly ruffled towards the bottom.

Spore print color: I only collected young ones and forgot that I should check the spore color of the older ones for IDing. I can check later today if necessary.

Bruising: None.

Thank you! Are these a good age for eating? Any cooking suggestions?

Yes they are a good age as long as the inside is pure white.

Slice them about 1/8th of an inch, fry them in butter at high temperature, add a little salt and pepper.
