If you want to approach this idea from a totally different angle you should read "Journey's Out of the Body" by Robert Monroe.  He was the foremost astral projection practitioner and he describes in one very far reaching out of body experience that he was floating at the tips of our galaxy viewing these membranes that separate dimensions and said it was one of the most beautiful things he has ever seen.  OOBEs and the people who can do them are like the mystics of our time.  Gathering data on what the universe looks like that even the Hubble can't perceive.
