What are your thoughts on the 11th dimension or M-Theory
    #13228547 -

M-Theory proposed an 11th dimension that mathematically rid the theory of any further anomalies. In this 11th dimension a string could acquire enough energy to expand infinitely into what scientists call a floating membrane. According to the theory, our universe exists on a floating membrane, along with infinite parallel universes on their own membranes. From this foundation, it was further found that (mathematically) gravity might “leak” into our membrane from another nearby membrane, accounting for its relatively weak force in comparison to the other forces.
What are your ideas and thoughts on M-Theory along with the 11th dimension.

What are the membranes floating on?

M-theory could end up being the singularity. The theory of everything.

Seems logical.   I get lost after 8 or 9, but I get the basic idea.

These kind of concepts are very intellectually interesting......but, my logic doesn't allow me to comprehend such things that are far above my head like this.

If it were true, thats crazy. But it wouldn't surprise me, because this existence is just full of surprises...

It just kind of repeats itself.  Up to dimension 5 it's easy.  Then it just repeats itself.

If you've never seen those vids they'll blow your mind till it shoots its load.   It's really all about connecting points.  It gets hard to follow after a while, but after a few views, if you're still interested, it makes perfect sense.

Its an interesting hypothesis, but perhaps a little too embraced.  I went to a talk by Freeman Dyson - he said that he thinks its worth pursuing, but that there are probably too many string theorists around.  He said that maybe having a thousand would be sufficient but there are about ten thousand in the world.  The thing is, if a school is trying to get a physics dept. up and running then string theorists are some of the cheapest and easiest professors to get.

And Newbie, I would be wary of such videos.  That one you posted is just the opinion of some musician.  It does not represent the mainstream view of higher dimensions, and it is not about the higher dimensions of string theory.

String theories ideas at its core make the most sense of the universe out of all the theories that I have ever heard

I thought only like a handful of people in the world really understand modern string theory?

whats my opinion on 11 dimensions over 10? what the fuck do i know.

sounds so crazy it just might be accurate.  The way chemistry or atomic physics does.

The whole insane dimensionality stuff doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me - but the basis of all energy and matter being vibrations makes more sense than anything :awesome:

Unlike string theory, which suggests living beings can only perceive the dimension they they live in, other theories suggest that beings living in a dimension can only perceive the ones below the one they live in (ie. we live in four dimensions, but can only perceive the previous three at one time).

I'm more interested in theories that actually attempt to explain the functions/forces in our  dimension (in which I believe to be the fourth), such as An Exceptionally Simple Theory of Everything. I still like thinking about string theory, but mostly when I'm taking psychedelic drugs.

Very interesting... It is precicely the ideas and feelings I get while on psychedelics that cause me to gravitate towards string theory :smile2: I do not know whether or not I agree with its complexities or not

i really could not have said it better myself.  i love reading about this stuff, but then when they start to explain it in mathematical terms, my brain starts to hurt.

Yea, not only that but if you try to explain a mathematical theory without mathematics you run the risk of misrepresenting the theory.  Its like explaining red to a blind person, you just cant do it.

my understanding is that string theory is purely a mathematical construct, put together so as to achieve results which are congruent with observation

in other words, it is not a model OF the world, it is a model that PARALLELS the world in terms of mathematical input and output

i don't take it literally, nor do i think it's a helpful way for us as individual humans to interpret our universe
but its a great tool for mathematicians

Mathematicians dont model observations though, that what physicists do.  Mathematicians arent bound by needing their mathematical systems to model our observations.

Otherwise, Im not sure I follow what you are saying (and if I do follow, Im not sure that I agree.)  A great many theories in science and physics are mathematically based, string theory is not alone in that regard.  We have invented mathematics for this very reason - many phenomenon resist non-mathematical modeling.

edit - I just thought, let me ask you this - How about mainstream quantum mechanics and general relativity?  They are also mathematical constructs put together to achieve results that are congruent with observation.  They are still models of the world/universe.  They are infact the most accurate models man has ever created.  Do you not take them literally, are they helpful for us to interpret the universe?

I do take them literally, just as literally as I take non-mathematical theories like cell theory or tectonic plate theory.  If they are not mathematical constructs invented to mesh with observation, then they are just some other type of construct made to mesh with observation.
