Protein Powders?
    #13200374 -

Hey, whats your favorite protein powders?

I tried hemp protein but every now & then it will react really bad in my stomach & give me really really bad trapped wind, so thats a no go for me, never liked whey, im thinking of giving brown rice protein a try...

Appreciate any advice... i usually eat some fish & nuts within a couple hours of working out but im looking for a protein hit right after i do kettlebells, i usually have a smoothie of figs, flax, maca, cacao, some berries & water right after ive done kettlebells but now im looking to throw some protein powder in there aswell

:peace:

I personally like to eat a bananna and then slam a hemp protein shake. Eat something that will coat your stomach so it won't upset it because it won't like the powder on an empty stomach after exercising. Toast or bananna works great..

Whey would be my second choice though because of its fast absorbing nature.

Have you tried soy?

I would stay away from soy protein. it may be cheap, but biologically it has a high amount of pyhtoestrogens which once introduced into the body can convert to estrogen and alter the sensitive testosterone/estrogen hormonal balance.  This is especially bad for males.  Stay away from soy milk too.

Plus soy has a pretty low bioavailability rate in comparison to other forms of protein.  Whey protein isolate is a top choice for muscle building and is fairly easy on the stomach unless you are lactose intolerant.

That stuff loks good but i cant find a reliable/cheap source in the uk, as long as brown rice protein digests ok then i should be fine going with normal brown rice protein, i heard its grainy but i chew my post workout smoothies anyway

Well excuse me if you are a Vegan or veggie but..

How about Whey Protein and Egg White Protein? They are among the very best fast proteins around!

You could make a mixture of 2 parts slow protein (like rice protein or casein), 1 part whey protein, 1 part egg white protein, add freezedried fruit juice or lemonade powder to that to taste and you got an excellent instant protein powder.

Its notr good to have ALL fast protein and its less than optimal to have ALL slow protein, mixtures are best, typically containing 25-50% fast protein, the rest slow. If you take large portions of protein, its best to go for 25% fast, as the body cant put too much protein in muscle in a short time, and will burn off the rest as fuel.

Dont EVER use gelatin. Gelatin is a fast protein yes, but it delivers some amino acids in excess while depleting others. Eat plenty of gelatin and you will LOSE muscle, not gain it, as your body will have to burn off muscle to get the essential amino acids that are missing.

If you're in the uk check out http://www.myprotein.co.uk/ they are cheap and have really good service, used them for last 2 years.

I use the Hurricane XS, it's whey isolate and some other goodies, creatine etc. Tastes great (vanilla is best IMO) and actually mixes well, stick in a couple of bananas and Robert is your Mother's brother. Works as meal replacement too. Yummy.

PS they do everything unflavoured too if that's your thing.

I wouldn't bother, it's some of the nastiest stuff.  Hemp hearts are the way to go.  Packed with protein and no having to choke down pasty gunk.

Protein powders are fail.  Many brands are contaminated with heavy metals like cadmium and arsenic.  Furthermore, most provide no nutrition other than protein.

http://jimmysmithtraining.com/six-pack-diet/heavy-metal-in-popular-protein-powders/

Your body can't use just protein, It NEEDS vitamins and minerals and fats to assimilate those proteins properly.  If you are continually consuming proteins which is devoid of these things (synthetic vitamins added in are crap too) it just pulls these nutrients from the rest of your body to deal with all this empty protein.

In hemp seeds the proteins are still raw and the vitamins and minerals are in protein complexes which makes them easier absorbed and assimilated.

Mother nature provided amazing foods for putting on functional muscle: meat, eggs, nuts seeds, etc.

Hemp seeds have all the protein, fat, vitamins and minerals you need, along with lots of antioxidants.

Hemp hearts are orders of magnitude healthier than whey.

Lastly, all those protein powders are just used to bulk up.  I think all those idiots in the gym look ridiculous with their soft puffy muscles which aren't actually functionally strong.  Work out to be strong and eat well, and you will put on easily maintained functional lean muscle, not puffy muscles.

P.S. If anyone says they need the supplement because they can't eat enough protein otherwise is just lying or not trying hard enough.

You are spot on, but I think protein powders (I use hemp) can be extremely beneficial for after workouts because of fast absorption rate and eat it with a banana and some nuts. The perfect combo for an after workout recovery with some good vitamins and minerals and good ratio of proteins/healthy fats/carb

If you eat good all day, you should have no worry about taking in a measly 100 calories or so from a protein shake

Hemp, as much as i love the cannabis plant, messes with my stomach real bad, so unfortunately i can't have it
The seeds, the protein powder, either way really give me bad wind, i could burp aaaall day long if i have hemp
My stomach violently heats up for some reason and then every burp after that is like an orgasm releasing the pain, lovely

I think im just gonna eat some nuts along with my post workout smoothie then

I eat fish a few hours after working out i just felt like maybe im missing out on the 20-30minute window after working out by not getting lots of fast protein
That sunwarrior stuff looks good but its too expensive man

How are you eating the hemp seeds and what are you eating with them?

I would try soaking a few tablespoons in a glass of water over night and use that in a smoothie (I have raw eggs, yogurt, banana, chia seeds, and some frozen berries).

Soaking overnight can help the digestion of the seeds.

Cool ill give it a go, sometimes im fine with the hemp protein, but other times that stuff will destroy me, i usually soak my goji berries from the night before so ill try putting some hemp seeds in aswell

I usually blend it in a smoothie of coconut, maca, goji, cacao, grapes, strawberries, water... that kinda stuff

In the past i found the gas usually went away if i ate a starchy meal afterwards, like rice or pasta or something like that, so maybe i need to take the hemp protein & eat something at the same time

I remember one time i ate a teaspoon of hemp seeds, they tasted so good i had another 3 teaspoons then in about half an hour i was doing the hugest burps of my entire life, but they weren't that funny cause it was very painful, maybe im allergic
