Auditory language vs. Visual language

Which do you think came first, audible language or visual language? By that I mean, do you think that sounds developed meaning before symbols? Suppose that at the point that humanoids were evolving complex communications, would a picture drawn in the dirt of say a prey animal come before the sound that means the prey? Do you see what I'm saying?

Symbols since reading body language would have distinct survival benefits.

But body language is a combination of auditory and visual communication, such as growls, grunts, and gestures. I was thinking about how hard it would be to develop a language among a group without having the means of explaing it to each member, when I began to think about simple symbols and how definitive they can be. But still...It's really getting my noodle in a bind.

Complex language seems to be a byproduct of evolution rather than a means of survival. We could survive as primitive humanoids without the structure of language, though it does give a distinct advantage. I think it is likely that visual and audible language developed in tandem. As one progressed so did the other.
