Any pubbers snowskate?
    #13197914 -

Well, I'm going to be broke as hell this winter so instead of snowboarding it looks like I'll just be getting a new snowskate and doing that since it's much cheaper.  I fell in love with snowskating 2 years ago after getting my first Ambition brand board, they react much more like a real skateboard, lots of pop.

Some of the team guys are sick :vaped:

Snowskating is a lot easier to do on a daily basis, and lot cheaper than snowboarding. But snowboarding is so so so much better than snowskating.

I don't own a snowskate buy on of my brothers does and I've fucked around on it before. Its closer to skating than snowboarding.

IK it isn't the same, I just can't afford to snowboard this year, the nearest mountain is now 75$ for a day lift pass

That looks like it would take a lot of skill. How do you get the board to land right side down without the trucks to weight it down? How do you stop on a snow skate? How are the boards different from just being the deck of a skateboard? So many questions!

Yea, really that shit looks sick!

Is it just a board with no trucks/wheels or what. I'd like to try that this year.

I have one of the older snowskates from around 2001. I'm not sure the ones in those videos are better designed. I don't even know where mine is though. Last winter me and a friend just used an old deck to ride down hills because we were bored. I have a snowboard too, but that shit's too expensive.

edit- to answer some people's questions, it's basically just a plastic skate deck with grooves in it. It's a little wider and the tail/nose are both huge because it's hard to pop in snow. And the grip isn't taped on, it's more of a rough foam surface. I'm not sure how the lack of trucks affects flip tricks, but the overall weight is more than that of just a regular deck with no trucks. It's pretty hard just to ollie on them honestly.

Snowskates are the coolest yet dangerous fucking thing ever.

My mountain started to allow them a couple years ago, but only on the bunny hill terrain park.. Well me and my asshole friends would try to go down intermediate and expert slopes with them.

They work surprisingly well, kids were able to pop onto rails to grind and what not. Also, the condition of the snow (sticky or fast) plays a big factor in if the snowskate is going to be usable or not. Stopping is the same as on a snowboard for the most part, you just kick it sideways and ride the edge.

Moral of the story, I was high one day fucking around on the side of a slope with the snowskate... when it slipped out from under me, threw me in the air, and I kicked a snowpile so hard it shattered my ankle and broke my leg. :crankey:

They are loads of fun when you have the right equip.  When I lived with my rents in Chicago I got one (2001) and they have a 2 acre hill at a good grade with a 4' high brick patio.  We used ply wood to make a kicker off that which would get you going and 2 ramps to rails (one being a kink), a fly box, 3 random placed rails, 4 random ramps ranging in size and a quarter pipe at the bottom.  Some of the best times were had out there.  It was better than a snowboard because it saves you time on strapping in.  But I'll be damned if there isn't one hell of a learning curve to olies and getting up on a rail!  The concave was nill back then and on soft snow it was :crankey: at first.

As to Gumby's Q, once you've skated a lot, it comes easy peasy.  A little learning from the change of weight and the grip is a foam and your off.  Besides, not haing trucks turned out to make it better when your doing a flip or shoveit onto a rail and there's less concern for board placement.

Yeah I used to have one, used it for a few years... not sure where it went! It was pretty much exactly like the ones in the videos, but I've seen a few different styles, like the kind that's a skateboard deck with a ski on the bottom, lame.

It's actually pretty damn hard imo, but landing a pop-shuvit off a jump is just fantastic. Or even just a moving ollie while going down a snowhill!

Yup... I saw that style as well.

I'm aware of three styles of snowskates..

one which is very concave which is basically a flat deck on the snow with grooves on the base.. Most similar to a skateboard in the sense that you are going straight like you are attached to wheels.

Another type is similar to the first, except it's raised up about 3 inches from the slope. I could literally shuv-it down the whole slope if I wanted to/conditions permitted it... Thing is it's hard to go in a straight line because the edges aren't as pronounced, less like a skateboard and more like a mini-strapless snowboard. (Broke my ankle and leg with this type)

And then there is the third, shitty kind that has a ski attached to the bottom. No comment needed.

I had the first, sorry to hear about your ankle.  I've never broken anything on snow, only cement.  Have you heard of a freebord?  That will fuck your bones up while your learning!  I still love it though, better than surfing down here.

Yeah, I used to be able to tout that I never broke a bone in my body.. Until I kicked a fucking snowbank wtffail.:lol:

I heard of freeboards last season and I was interested.. Thing is I barely got enough cash to support my snowboarding. Maybe this year. :awesome:

I have rode both the kind with the ski on the bottom and the kind thats just like a skate deck.

The kind with the ski on the bottom isn't that bad. It feels alot more like snowboarding and it carves alot better and is easier to handle.

BINGO!  The only brand worth buying if you truly want pop like a board are the Ambition brands boards made in Canada.  The only other boards that are even considerable are the Premier brand ones if you can still find the NYLON core ones, not wood, their wood decks blow.  If you get an Ambition though you HAVE to pre-order or you'll never get one as they sell out fast each year, also it's advisable to buy the extra grip kit that you see all the pros using.

Someone uploaded the entire true colors DVD to youtube here is part 1, obviously you can find the rest.

The whole dvd is also available in HD on the ambition site for free now, definitely worth the watch if you're into this or skating.

Sick video! It's crazy that people can control those things like that.

They'd be pulling some way sicker tricks if they were strapped into a snowboard tho!

It's all in the board man, I tried riding one of the new wood Premiers a few years back and it has absolutely no pop whatsoever.  Best thing I could manage on it was a kick flip and there was just enough air, barely, for one rotation before you landed.  You can ollie just as high as a skateboard on an ambition and they are much easier to "steer," I put that it quotes since full turns aren't really possible on these things.
