Furthur vs The Dead

Just wondering what people's thoughts are on this.  Now when I say "The Dead," I'm referring to the 2009 concoction with Warren Haynes playing lead guitar.

I definitely liked The Dead's tour for nostalgic reasons.  In my opinion, though, John Kadlecik is head & shoulders above Warren in the "imitating Jerry" department.  I think Joe Russo offers a different energy with the drumming.

Personally, I'd rather see Furthur in the smaller venues, and I think they sound closer to the Grateful Dead than The Dead did last year.

I agree 100%.

I love Warren with Allman Brothers and he sounded good with The Dead but "something" was missing. I think JK, Chimenti, and Russo have totally re-energized Bobby and Phil and brought their playing to levels last seen when Jerry was around.

I think they should still get a little more out there and spacey. They hit some awesome jams and grooves but it's rare that they get out out out there. No Drums/Space, ya know?

I saw the dead in 2003 with jimmy herring from widespread panic on lead guitar. he was awesome but if you want something that sounds more like jerry then furthur is where its at.  i saw them at a festival this summer though and i wasn't really feeling it. the energy wasn't really there that night i guess.

I really hope they start going into more spacey stuff, it would be awesome to see how they do when they push the boundaries.  Bob & Phil definitely feed off the vibrance of the rest of the crew, I wish they'd just have John K sing when they play a song that Jerry sang.  It just doesn't feel right when Bob sings those pieces...that's why they GOT John K!  lol

I feel ya. There's definitely a few songs he does that bothers me. Standing on the Moon and Sugaree are the top ones. Phil on Eyes of the world and Franklin's tower is a bust too.

At the Ithaca show, John sang his only Sugaree and it was fucking amazing. Easily the best Sugaree they've ever done. Also they did an unbelievable Morning Dew. A great Unbroken Chain too. This band definitely takes that song to places they Dead we're never able to since they broke it out so late in their career. The biggest bummer of the show was Phil on Peggy-O and Bobby on Standing.

Oh don't get me started on Bobby singing SOTM, that's just all kinds of wrong!  Although Phil's gotten a little better as Furthur has progressed, he still sounds like a tired & old mule when he sings.  lol

John did a STELLAR Morning Dew on 3-6-10 in Broomfield.  In fact, the Dark Star -> Time -> Dark Star -> Morning Dew is a must-hear, IMO.  I unfortunately couldn't go to Phil's Birthday show, but both Broomfield shows kicked!

Yeah, I don't know what they were going for with the birthday show, but I don't think they got there.  I like that they tried something a little different for it, though, I'll give 'em credit for that...but yeah, definitely not one of their best shows.

Well I'll be at MSG in November for both Furthur shows. Got very good tickets for both nights.

I'm seeing JGB on 10/15 in NJ who i really dig. I think Stu Allen is another great guitarist in the dead realm.

I'm joining Dark Star Orchestra for 6 shows on their current tour. Baltimore, DC, NJ, DE, Philly, NYC. Starts on Friday, can't wait! I am looooving Jeff Mattson right now. He brings IT!

Red Rocks should be amazing. I've only heard great things about the venue. The shows the dead performed there are legendary.

Both 7/7/78 and 7/8/78 shows are phenomenal.

8/30/78 has the breakout of Stagger Lee and If I had The World to Give... One of only 4 performances ever.

8/31/78 has the breakout of Shakedown Street. Nuff said.

Yeah, I have both Grateful Dead shows from 1978 and I've been drooling about Furthur's 3 Red Rocks shows since I bought the tickets.  Actually, my first thought after their 2nd show in Broomfield was "OMG, it would be awesome if they played Red Rocks....I soooo want a Furthur @ Red Rocks show..." lol

It has very unique & beautiful acoustics that make it perfect for jam bands.  Couple that with a perfect view of the Denver skyline, and it's just...  :aweoverdose: :aweoverdose:
