Why aren't I feeling the GreateFul Dead?!?....any song recommendations
    #3728264 - 02/03/05 11:38 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

First, Im a very open minded person and enjoy all genres of music. Iv'e gottten into the pink floyd stuff, Dillan, the Doors, the Beatles. Jimi Hendrix..etc.etc. For some reason, when I listen to the Grateful Dead, they just dont strike that much of an interest. Im wondering if there has to be some type of introduction for me to fully understand what all you Dead heads see in this band. They are obviously popular for a reason and I just want to experience a tinge of this enchantment that you shroomerites feel. What are some good songs that you recommend for a first timer?

It took me a long time to get into the Dead, but then I downloaded the album "American Beauty." As far as tracks, I recommend Ripple, Truckin, Friend of the Devil, Box of Rain, Jack Straw, and Brokedown Palace.

Deadheads always kept telling me to listen to Dark Star, but I always thought the vocals on that track were sub-par. One reason it took me so long to get into the Dead is that Deadheads kept recommending the wrong tracks.

I feel the same about the grateful dead as you do. although it's good music it really isn't my thing. I don't mind it actually, there's plenty of other good music out there that I do like and as with all music styles-->some strike you and some don't. I wouldn't force it to yourself to like them :smirk:

i really dig "help on the way" and the jam they go into after that called "Franklin's Tower"

also, "China Cat Sunflower" is a bad ass song, as well as "Box Of Rain"..

my gf doesn't really like the dead but she likes "touch of grey" so you might, too? i dunno.

i love 'em, but it definitely took me a while to get into it.. even after that i still have to be in the mood for them usually..

I never really got into the dead either but i love Pink Floyd. Try getting stoned and just relaxing and close your eyes and listen to the slow solos from the wall. They will take you away.

First of all to get into The Dead you have to get into the music the dead is all about. Its a strange mixture of rock, bluegrass, and a variety of stuff. As far as musicians go their ontop of the late 60s psychedelic, with Jefferson Airplane and Quicksilver messenger service up there as well.

A very different style.

Wow... how sad. I always viewed the music as an expression of the scene. It really was about more than the music. We're acidheads basically bro. The scene was way cool. Get together, party it up. Smoke weed, thread the parking lot, score doses, nitrous, meet people. Get high, score a ticket.

Make it into the show, and the electric pulses from the acid are starting to tickle your spine. ahhh damn. What I wouldn't give for a dead show. To be peakin hard on LSD, one song blending into another, eternity blue. Sweet, beautiful, ecstatic experience. Nothing like drums/space high on acid, OR chinacat rider.

The Grateful Dead and LSD go together like peanutbutter and jelly. It was a wonderful thing. With a nice sense of community. Just the wonderful comforting voice of Jerry and the presense of the band and thirty thousand other heads was a great thing. I really miss it. I miss the terradactyls dancing in the screen, and the skulls in the clouds. I miss Jerry and the whole colorful scene.

The music is jamband taste so take it that way. Chinacat/Rider goes well with ecstacy and much better with LSD. You have to realize that the Grateful Dead played the ACID TESTS back when LSD was LEGAL. The Grateful Dead experience was an extension and continuation of that experiment.

I'd recommend some acid and a high quality live show. Then you just might get it.

Peace,

A live recording is the best. My favorite is Doz'n at the Nick
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/det...043836?v=glance

Listen to it on a low dose of shrooms or acid. Each song is like a single brush stroke painting a beautiful picture which is the whole album. This one peeks with Lady with a Fan-Terrapin station-Drums

Another favorite is Without a Net
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/det...043836?v=glance

The triad of Slipknot -Help on the way- Franklin's tower is so profound that it often makes me cry.

I agree that the dead is an acquired taste, but once you get it you will be hooked. A little acid helps.

someone poeple just have have a hard time wrapping there head around the music.

my GF (not so sure anymore) liked the dead but didnt really "like" them if you know what i mean. Shes a big tool head and loves all that dark sounding type of stuff. But considering the life she has lived im not suprised that she has a hard time relating to the dead. She related to the kinds of lyrics NIN has...shes had a very depressing life.

different stroked for different folks. I remember i never liked the dead. Untill i started ketiing stoned and i listened to some of there popular songs and liked them...the others just grew on me and tunred into a wonderfull addiction.

songs like dark star are the untimate of the deads aquired taste unless your on about 300ugs of LSD

The problem with listening to a new band, especially something as unique as the grateful dead, is that your not used to listening to a new type of music. The way i started listening to Grateful dead (as well as other bands like Jefferson airplane, Bob Dylan) is not downloading 5 albums and locking yourself in your room listening to them over and over. Download 4-5 songs that we are recomending and burn them into a CD of some of your other music and listen to that mix for awhile, kind of like testing the water before you jump in. Once you start getting some of the songs stuck in your head (and as long as it dosent bug the hell out of you) start listening to them more and more. Once you get to liking it you'll be as much as a deadhead as anyone out there.

As for recomendations, i'd say Fire on the Mountain, Casey Jones, Eyes of the world (live), Scarlet Begonias, Till the Morning Comes, and Touch of Grey.

There are many levels of meaning in that song. The Dead's music is not just entertainment. It's deep philosophy.

Wow Man I agree with a lot of people who say that if you don't get into the dead you might just never get into it but i would love to make you a fan cause they really are an incredible band. I saw a lot of people suggested chincat, touch of grey, etc. but i would stress Uncle John's Band, Eyes of the World to get hooked on their sound. then you have to check out live recording of "He's Gone" greatest song ever that some people even say is "about tripping". I would then just keep listening to some good live shows id be happy to give you some specific suggestions. like most jambands the dead is all about song changeover and the movement of a specific set. After all that I would have to OFCOURSE suggest the Jerry Garcia David Grisman stuff done later in Jerry's life. 'Been All Around This World' is a great album with "Sitting HEre in Limbo" a classic song. This is a totally different sound from the dead, just Jerry and his old raspy voice. hope that helps you out! i totally disagree with that dude who said dead and lsd go together like peanutbutter and jelly. not true. tripping to anything is great, but the dead can always be appreciated.

I have checked out a few songs and so far none of them are really hittin the spot. I mean, its not bad music but I still dont understand how some people are so fanatical over them. I will continue to explore their music in the meantime but if I do exhaust all my options, I guess Ill either have to see "The Dead" live or mix a few of their tracks into my trippin CD---next time I do a psychadelic. I dont really like Phish either and Im nor suggesting that this music is bad or not artistic but I have succesfully grasped different genres that werent really my style in the past and this whole Greatful Dead thing is kind of a bump in the road. I talked to my music teacher and he said that the Grateful Dead are more of a show than they are musical geniuses (Unlike the psychadelic Pink FLoyd band, they havent sold many records---- doesnt make a difference IMO though), Im not saying what my teacher says is true and Im sure I will never be a die hard Dead Head like some of you are but Im still searching for the reasoning behind this craze. Maybe Im just expecting too much and Jinxing myself....oh well Ill contiue to keep an open mind and maybe one day something will click.
Thanks for the help, Psilly

I can totally relate man...right now is a time in my life where a lot of my tastes and styles in music are slowly changing as I'm learning more and more about our culture and the role psychedelics have played in it.  I've always loved many genres of music, but now I'm really getting into the most intelligent and articulated types of music, music which holds secrets and things only a select few people ever discover.  This makes life seem magical to me and I love every moment of it.

I wanted to share this sort of realization I've had with you guys and see what you think...it's just an idea and I have no research to back it up other than my own perception.

(1)When you go to shows or festivals with jam bands, you sometimes will see small children dancing around, playing, absolutely loving the music, pure unconditional appreciation to be alive and listening to funny noises that sound great together. Even though the children don't nearly understand the environment at a festival, or even life in general yet, if really bad music was being played the children would eventually cry by nature.  However, once the child grows up and starts to appreciate control and stability, the taste in music changes.  This happens to most people I think.  Thats why pop music is so popular with the teenagers, because they're still stuck in that mode.  Its not that the music is ALL that bad, its that they haven't had the necessary experiences yet to even allow them to enjoy more intelligent music.  This says a LOT I think.  When I've tripped and gone to shows like phish, moe., the Dead, I think its like that little child in you comes out...sometimes in a laughy giggly way, but I'm talking more about a feeling of regressing back to childhood because you have allowed yourself to have a totally new view of the world, only now you're much older and "wiser", so its not obvious that this always happens, some people may not even admit anything like this happens, but I think its very liekly.

Everyone says tripping is almost like becoming another person for a short period of time, seeing things for the FIRST time from another perspective, akin to being a child again.  I think one of the major reasons there are so many Dead fanatics is mostly because of the ever-so-important involvement of LSD in the Dead culture, and also because their music is intelligent, can be laid back or rockin, original, fun, and it somehow seems like they've been everywhere and done everything, and written a song about everything.  The first time I ever actually appreciated a Dead song was on nitrous, it was (truckin'), then I tried listening to some tripping and just fell in love!

After those moments of seemingly impossible notions/ideas I perceived thru the music...as if the Dead knew exactly what to do/play to tweak my brain right the fuck out and ask questions like "how could this be possible, they were playing in a different time and setting, how could they KNOW that this note or riff or whatever was going to lead me to the some of the greatest revelations I've ever had?...how could they understand??"  well my question was answered shortly thereafter, and I think its because they were apart of the biggest psychedelic culture known, probably more experienced in the lifestyle than I or most mediocre psychedelic users may ever be, and therefore knew exactly what common LSD phrases like "today was the greatest story ever told" meant, which really only someone on LSD or experienced with it could understand close to perfectly.  Bands like this know how earth-shattering LSD can be, and the greatest jam bands I think treat their fans with the utmost honor by doing things they know the people on LSD will be blown away by.  This has begun to apply to many many genres of music, and the most recent being the Rave scene and ecstasy, its the same concept, but unfortunately I think MDMA is much inferior to LSD (another discussion altogether).  Don't ask me specifically what it is the bands do because I still haven't figured it out, and when I do, I'm not telling anyone because my goal is to become a ground-breaking musician some day    but it goes beyond mere chance or randomness, there is an art to it that the Dead mastered.

The funny thing is, after I really "heard" the Dead for the first time, I continued to like their songs, hear them differently almost, and really appreciate most of what they had to offer, even songs I didn't like at first.  All it took was one moving experience.  It's like my brain just "gets it" now.

absolute madness!

i haven't seen anyone mention www.archive.org .  although i may have missed it as i definitely am tired and kinda skipped over a few posts, although i'm sure the ones i missed were as good as the ones i saw.

every year from 1965-1995 has a different "feel" to the music, and most people say they like the live stuff better than studio.  putting two and two,  imean one and one together, you should go to archive.org and browse around.

the way i got into the dead was funny.  totally by accident.  it was the second or third or fourth or anyway, one of the first times i smoked weed and i was really feeling good and we were driving thru the woods real slow and i was with some of my good friends and this kid who i knew was cool but never really hung out with him put Truckin (studio version) on and it was just like time stood still.  and i tried explaining to everyone about how time could like slow down until it freezes in the present moment or something i dont remember, but nobody understood and i was like, uh oh, i'm gonna have a hard life if i can't even explain good things to people.  nobody will understand.  and thats pretty much how it has turned out come to think of it.  wish i never heard of them (just kidding) but you know what i mean.

edit:  they just blew my mind in a new and better way than ever before with this song: http://www.archive.org/details/gd70-09-20.aud.remaster.sirmick.27583.sbeok.shnf uncle johns band.  literally seconds after i was jokingly saying i wish i never heard of them.

I wasn't really in to the dead

Until I tripped and put pandora on the dead station

Then it made sense

I still don't jam them on the daily, but they got a place in my library now.

Same. I was never a dead head. Im still not. I really do appreciate the music though. I was at a friends house years ago tripping on some mushrooms, and he put on a live version of dark star. Song was like 20 something minuted long. I was just staring at the lava lamp on my ceiling. After that, I loved the dead.
