"I don't wanna blow me own trumpet, but we're pretty damn gifted people."
- Simon Jones, 1995

"I can name you 50 bands who are doing OK now and in two years they will be forgotten. They're just this summer's T-shirt. History will forget them. But history has a place for us. It may take three albums but we will be there."
- Richard Ashcroft, 1993

"They're a bunch of space cadets led by Captain Rock."
- Noel Gallagher on The Verve

Band: Originally called "Verve" but they later changed it to "The Verve" because they where about to be sued by A Jazz Lable already called "Verve".
Formed: 1989 in Lancashire (Wigan)
Music Category: Shoegazing, Dream-Pop, (indie ...grrrrrr...)
Members: Richard Ashroft (vocals), Nick McCabe (Lead Guitar), Simon Jones (Bass Guitar), Pete Salisbury (Drums) and Simon Tong (Guitar/Keyboards).
Albums: Verve EP (92), A Storm In Heaven (93), No Come Down (94), Northern Soul (95), Urban Hymns

This thread is for fans of one of the greatest bands to have ever existed

I ask that you share your memories of the band. Your favorite and most memorable songs. Your favorite album, and your favorite member.

As you know, (The)Verve broke up back in 97-98, but the memory lives on.

Please, if your a Verve fan, please add to this thread.

I'll be adding things as time goes by, this is all there is for now.

I thought you meant Verve Records. I like Roy Hardgroove.

The Verve was a great group,
but sadly their Egos were to big for eachother.

I listened to "Urban Hymns" on headphones,
while sitting in the middle of the Forest,
after eating a handful of fresh Cyans.

It was an extraordinary experience.

another great group that died before it's time: Dead Can Dance.

FOR THOSE THAT ARE NEW TO VERE, TRY THESE SONGS AND YOU MIGHT GET HOOKED:
They're all downloadable on Kazaa with a little bit of patience, you'll find them.

History

On Your Own

This is Music  Little difficult to find than the others, but great song

Drugs dont work

Bittersweet Symphony

Lucky Man

Sonnet

One way to go   Little difficult to find than the others, but great song

The Sun The Sea    :sun:

Slide Away   Not the Oasis song of the same name  A bit harder to get but nice song

ALBUM RECOMENDATION OF THE MONTH FOR THOSE NEW HERE IS, OF COURSE,  A NORTHERNSOUL. DOWNLOAD A FEW OF THE SONGS AND BUY THE ALBUM IF YOU LIKE IT, WHICH IM SURE YOU WILL!

Review: Though shorn of the more overtly shoegazer-styled elements of their debut A Storm in Heaven, the Verve's sophomore effort A Northern Soul is no less epic in scope, forging a heavier, more traditionally psychedelic sound infused with a chaotic energy which mirrors the emotional upheaval at the heart of Richard Ashcroft's songs. Reportedly produced under the influence of excessive drug use, the album is harrowingly intense, its darkly hypnotic momentum steered by Nick McCabe's spiraling guitar leads and Ashcroft's incantatory vocals; tracks like the remarkable "On Your Own," "So It Goes," and the majestically morose "History" are searing evocations of isolation and desperation, soaring yet heartbreaking anthems of disillusionment

This is just one of the obvious stand-outs from Verve. Obviously my all time favorite, as well as one of the top favorites for Verve fans around the world. Please, if you took some time to check out the album after reading this, let me know what you thuaght!

PLEASE! VERVE FANS, CONTRIBUTE TO THIS THREAD AND MAKE IT ALIVE. ILL BE ADDING TO IT AS MUCH AS I CAN. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY COOL LINKS THAT YOU LIKE AND LET US KNOW WHAT YOU LOVE ABOUT VERVE. THANK YOU!

I downloaded History and gave it a listen. I liked it, it has some lush string layering. Though I don't think I could ever really get into one of these British bands like The Verve and Oasis, talking themselves up that they're the best thing that's ever happened to music.

Thank you for giving Verve a listen and being open minded.

Yes, it's unfortunate. It's that exact same ego ("were the best" etc) that contributed to the split. It's mainly the lead singer Richard Ashcroft. He thinks he's invincible! .........
That  can be a plus to think so positive, and it's that exact same thinking that got them as far as they did, but ironicly forced Nick out (the guitarist) he couldnt take it. Or was the most sensitive to it I guess.....

My favourite Verve track would be Slide Away.

Band egotism is funny for a very short while then it gets tired very quickly.

(Decides to put on "Soon" - My Bloody Valentine).
